the past few days my car has been shaking when when stopped or idle. It would be in neutral for about a min or so, and then it would start shaking and i was watch the tach it would idlearound 1000 and then drop to 500 and the car sounded and felt like it wanted to die and my head lights dimmmed then it got back up to 1000's. It seems it doesnt say at a consistant rpm when idling. People say it might be the alternator and i think so to. Help please thank you

I know what you mean

I had the same problem with my old 1.9L, I checked out every option i could think of and even let 2 dealers take a look at it.

Dealer 1 said it was an ecu problem - I bought the new ecu, didn't fix it.
Dealer 2 said it was the alternator - I installed an aftermarket high output alternator, didn't fix it

I did some more reading and installed an underdrive pulley. This seemed to take enough load off the motor to allow it to maintain a good idle.

I am not a mechanic so don't take my word as the golden solution however, from a logical standpoint an underdrive pulley is the perfect solution.

www.escortfocus.com - these guys have 25% and 50% pulleys

I would see if someone with more mechanical background has any better ideas but I know for the 1.9L that used to be in my 95lx it seemed to solve the problem.

that's what i had, a vacuum leak.
check for moisture in the gas tank (car cleaner will do the trick), air filter, and check plugs & wires. could make a difference..
hope you get it resolved, i hate not having a healthy car.

yea mine does that not all the time tho, it would idle and drop after a few mins and then come up and idle fine, do u know why it does this? The only mods i have has was taking out the silencer, new ngk spark plugs and cleaning the intake manifold/clean tb and all of those were done a while ago and i didnt have the problem then.

I've got a similar problem... The rpm went to 500 and the car was shaking...

I did a good tune up, it didn't solved the problem...

Finally the problem was a leak in the intake, changing the gasket solved the problem, now my idle is perfect (1000)...

Just my 2 cents :?

we should check ur TB gasket. you might have a leak through that. unlikely, but we can throw on a new homemade gasket and see if it does anything. maybe its a idle air valve. i have a couple spares we could try and see.

i had the same problem on my 1.9l but come to find out my seatbelt motors were going bad nd they were trying to pull on the track and it would bogg my engine a lil bit so i took the fuse out that supplys the seatbelt motors and it solved the problem.
