Oh no, he beat me to the supercharger.... And a Jackson model too! I was working on a baby Vortech running off an accessorial belt, easier due to size, I just didn´t think a Jackson would fit. Yes, please post pics when you can.

Seriously, I think that´d be awesome! And if anyone wants to do a littlw blurb on the differences between turbocharging and supercharging, that would also be great as I am debating between the two.

I have been debating between the 2 also. I want to know how hard it was to get that on there and what mods did it take. Isn´t the johnson like 2 grand?? Sounds awsome though.

Basically, rellimpk, the difference between a supercharger and a turbo is how the boost is created. A Supercharger is belt driven off the crankshaft and a turbocharger uses exhaust gases to spin the turbine which in turn compresses the intake air. the difference is that the tubo has less mass and weight but you´ll have to re-route your exhaust and intake tubes to accomodate the turbo and you´ll also want to put on an intercooler. It also typically chokes the exhaust into the turbo and wastegate. Superchargers usually weigh more and are slightly less efficient. However, it´s easier to up the boost as all you have to do is shorten the pully that drives the turbine. Hope that helps ;-)

Yeah, James pretty much said it...except Im a turbo nut for one reason. Here´s two ways you can increase boost in a turbo motor:

1. turn knob on the boost controller (takes a couple seconds)

2. Flip switch or press a button on more expensive boost controllers.

For a supercharger changing a pulley can take some work, and then you also have think, somtimes you may need a new belt for it too.

Other then that, both are forced induction methods. Both increase intake air charge temps, both require money and tuning. One thing Superchargers are great for are producing boost instantly. I spool pretty quick (5psi at 2800rpms) but a supercharger is instant.

You are forgetting one major difference. The main diff between a supercharger and a turbo charger is the spool times. Turbos have a large amount of boost, but they usually dont get that boost till about 3500-4000 rpm.. Where as, supers dont have incredible boost, but that boost comes right away. Turbos suffer from the turbo lag, which is htat range where the boost isnt spooled up yet

Atually, I knew those differences, just wanted to know which was easier and cheaper, although from what I´ve seen, the answer to both questions would be the supercharger. I wouldn´t add forced induction until I do an engine swap anyway, which will be a while. :)

*SIGH* One of these days my 2nd GT will be in my Scort family and I will be turboing it. ;-) When I do, watch out import world, Rascal´s on the attack! :-D Gotta love dreams and goals. ;-)

I´d love to super charge, but my engine has so many miles on it, i´d have to rebuild it to deal with the stress factor a super charger puts on it. Gotta think 45% of the power from the super charger is lost with stress to the engine spooling it. Supercharger is the best route if you can get it tuned just right.

Well one reason I didn´t mention about boost lag is because it really depends on the size of your turbo...smaller ones will spool faster thereby creating less lag, the downside is that that smaller turbo won´t spool enough air for higher RPMs, which is why the Skyline GT-R and Supra TT (among other cars) use sequential TTs (Twin Turbo´s). One small turbo to create boost at low RPMs and one large turbo for the higher RPMs. However, adding this to a car that wasn´t built for TT would be quite costly and it would not be very easy. :)

Regarding doing both super and turbo. Max Power had an article several years ago about a VW Corrado that had the G60 supercharger AND an auxilliary turbo. Called it a "twincharger". Most of the article was about the looks and handling and not nearly as technical as I´d like it to have been. Would be cool though, use the supercharger for instant response and then switch over to turbo in the high rpms. It´d be like having an engine twice your size. But for the cost of installation and troubleshooting, you really could buy an engine twice your size and get it installed...
