I understand fully, it is a fun car and great to learn with. It is a work in progress as mine was once. It have potential; drive smart, don't beat on the trans, and it will give back as much as you put in. Mine was originally a '91 GT as well and it has many original parts still doing fine and pushing 200K. Start narrowing down the issue and you will find the cause.

Mitzu? Do you mean Mazda? I would check the intake items to start. Since it seems to fire and run briefly, other systems would seem OK. The VAF might be bad, sticky, not properly plugged in, corroded connections. Your issue is probably a small one, which can be hard to find. If you were a local, I'd run my spare VAF over to eliminate it as a suspect.

Off what Mitzu? Because Mitzu makes many electrical parts for many cars, the alternator is a mitsubishi.

I believe all the EGTs have the "Mitsubishi" alternator, I know mine does. I assume the car ran with that distributor before timing issue and storage?

idk if the 1.8's have an idle air control valve but that's what chilton(repair manual) is showin me and that sounds to be the culprit. if no IACV then IDK

sounds to me like a possible fuel starvation. although i haven't read the entire post from front to back. but if you have to keep in the throttle to keep it running here are some more options.

    A.Leak in intake system
    B.fuel starvation
C.air fuel mixture screw turned in to far
    D.Throttle position sensor turned wrong

That's all my little brain can think of right this minute.
