So I have a set of 14x7" wheels I intend to put on my 88 exp. What would you say is the widest tire I would safely put on the wheel before I run into problems? I was thinking of running 205/55/14
I wish could get 195/55/14 but I can't find any in that size.

205s should be fine on a 7" wide wheel.

I thought that would be fine. My other concern would be if they rub the fender or wheel well.
I may just get 185/55/14, if so I don't have to worry about rubbing, but I don't know if 185 would take the power with amount of weight removed from the front end of the car.

Why not go with a 15" wheel? The stock size is 195/60/15 on a 1st gen GT so that is a known quantity.

I do have 2 sets of 15" gt wheels, but I not a fan of the looks. My plan was to use them on my 2019 fiesta as they fit fine and one set has snows and I could put summer tires on the other set.
But I did think about getting at set of 205/50/15 for the EXP.

I have a set of NOS 14" RS wheels I wanted to use on my EXP. They are lighter then the 15" GTs and with the right tires the over all weight of the tire/wheel should be less then a stock setup.

I ran 205 width tires on my 14 x 5 or 5.5" rims on my old Ford, so I imagine you could go a lot wider with 7" wide rims.
No doubt you will be limited by tire rub against bodywork first.

Maximum rim width for 185/55r14 is 6.5" so you can't safely run them on a 7" wide wheel.

I just checked one of those generic tire web sites which gave the following info for 7" wide rims:

Minimum tire width 195. Ideal 205 or 215. Maximum 225.

I seen charts say that too, but I herd from word of mouth from quite a few peps say it will fit.

"fit" and safe are two different things. The stance guys will stretch tires on way wider wheels than they should all in the name of "style"

I see the tire fitment I used for years on my old car was "wrong" as well.
But I was just driving around, not cornering hard or any of that crazy stuff.

Good point. I'll probably go with 205/55
Really wish there was more options for 14"

Is there any reason why you are set on 14" wheels and 55 series tires? Are you racing? The only tires available in 205/55r14 are basically for racing. 195/60r14 would give you a lot more options in a 14" size and are only .3" taller.

What about the tire running with 205/55/14s?
