How-To: Seafoam your car

Okay since there is so much confusion on how to run Seafoam through your Escort, here goes:

1. Warm up your car

2. Pour Seafoam into a clear container (so you can see how deep the vacuum line is).

3. While the car is warmed up and still running, unplug one of the vacuum hoses. While you can use the PCV vacuum hose, its alot easier to use one of the smaller vacuum hoses since your car wont stall as easily.

4. Your car should still be running. If it stalled when you disconnected the vacuum hose, try again or use another line.

5. Take the vacuum hose and slowly bring it to the top of the seafoam you have in the container. Don't comepletely submerge the hose into the Seafoam, instead just allow the hose to go deep enough so that it sucks the Seafoam at a good rate (in other words, enough so that it doen't idle perfectly but doesn't stall either).

6. Once you have allowed the vacuum line to suck in the amount of seafoam specified on the bottle, submerge the vaccum line into the seafoam so that the car stalls.

7. Wait 5 minutes.

8. Restart the car.

9. You will get alot of smoke, and i mean alot! You can either just leave the car parked and rev the motor, or go out and drive it hard until the smoke stops coming out.

10. Thats it, you're done. You can also add some seafoam to the gas tank and to the engine oil. If you do add seafoam to the gas, it will probably clog up your fuel filter from all of the fuel tank deposits it will unlodge. So change the fuel filter afterwards. The can also recommends adding it to the oil right before you change the oil. So dont add any to the oil if you will not be changing it in the next 50 or so
miles.

I agree, nice post.

also i've used Seafoam to clean both my injectors and crankcase.

in the injectors it seems to smooth my idle(sound mostly, but feel as well.) a little bit.
With the latter, it felt like the car accelerated smoother into high speed.

does it do anything for cleaning the outside of your motor as a degreaser? that would be cool. presure wash it into my engine bay and clean about another 10 lbs of drit out of it.

go to discount, or any auto store and buy some Gunk Foamy Engine Brite, I use it under the hood about once a month. works wonders.
I use it under the car(oil pan, tranny, etc) once every few months.

cleans so well it looks like i just drove it off the lot. 8)

just remember if you have a real old vehicle, this could potentially cause more harm than good. If carbon is the only thing keeping your seals in tact, then using the seafoam to beak up the carbon is a big mistake.

Just something to note.

Otherwise, i just ran it in my 99 and from this day forward i am a follower.

there's no way of knowing unfortunatelly... but so far, everyone who's used it hasn't had any issues... I put it in my 93, but I have a GTX engine in there and I have no clue of it's mileage... could be 40k could be 200k for all I know... but it cleaned it up real well without any issues...

I'd say go for it, out of about 20 people here who did it, nothing bad happened, and some had pretty old cars with a lot of mileage... so we're down to a below 5% chance that something goes wrong....

hmmmm

well, i just bought a can today. I worked in an auto-parts store for quite some time and steven (aka ohhhchittt from escortunderground) can vouch that for the most part i know my shit with cars. Especially escorts. (since i've done 3 complete teardowns and rebuilds minus the motor - doin the 2.0 swap as i type) But my 94 is running a little "shakey" so to speak, so i'm gonna give it a try today and see how thing's go. It's got roughly 120K on the motor. (changed the damn speedo so many times i'm not sure till i discovered lithium greese...lol) But i will keep you all posted on how things turn out. From what i saw on the website and other users posts both here and micellanous forum's, i'm gonna add 1/2 pint to the crankcase and 1/2 pint to the oil and change the oil thursday when i get paid. (it comes in a 1 pint can by the way for those who don't know). It costs $6.35 here in the four courners area (WV, VA, PA, MD) @ AutoZone. anyways, i figure @ this point I don't have much to lose. Yeah my car maybe, but if it don't cure it it'll kill it. One way or another i'll be done with the idling / power / hesitation problems. And in any case I've got another 1.9L that purred like a kitten when i pulled it from my project car. (Seriously, i've never seen or heard a motor this smoothe in an Escort). I was going to sell it, but , i'm going to see what happens with the seafoam, and with any luck, it'll be back to new without swapping yet another motor. The 1.9L to 2.0 SPI so far has been enough. But then again i'm doing a full custom interior, exterior, ect. ect. on the project. Anyways, enough blabbering....on to the seafoam. Let u know soon.

happy.....maybe

Well, I did the seafoam. 1/2 pint in the vaccum and 1/2 in the oil. I let it sit for about 5-7 minutes. Then started it back up. SMOKE?,...u wanna talk about smoke?....woohoo, i'll tell u what, and it stinks. But i just kept it @ about 3k RPM for approx 10 minutes. When i wasn't sure if it was done smoking i just played with the throttle letting it drop a bit and bringing it back up until nothing was apparent. It seamed to make a bit of a difference in the fact that it'll slightly chirp into 2nd gear again and 5th gear on the highway WILL accelerate. Though it's a slow acceleration it's still accelerating unlike before where 4th gear was required to go anywhere. I just changed my oil tonight. I ran it in the oil to and from work for 3 days. I work about 10 miles from my house. I had just changed the oil about 1k miles ago, but it came out thick and black like it hadn't been 10k miles. But i took a flahlight and looked into the crankcase and while it's still a bit dingy it's definately cleaner. I'm gonna due it again in about 1k miles and see what happens. But, no bad experiences and as i said, i haver noticed an improvement. Not a huge one but we are talking about a 94 1.9L. I'm not asking for miracles here....hahaha. Anyways, i bounce between Va and Quebec cause my wife is Quebecois, but my family lives in Va. Though i just moved to the 4 corners area (Va, Wv, Md, Pa.) So I say Seafoam on guys, don't be scared...step right up. It didn't kill it, it cured it if anything. Kind of a multivitamine Centrum 55+ for the old 1.9L. Enjoy :D
