power window installation how-to

1991-1996 ford escort 2 door and 4 door
1991-1996 mercury tracer

i wrote this for any one who wants to put in power windows. keep in mind that these are coming out of a four door, unless you are the lucky one who has found a two door with power windows. if they are going into a two door, every thing is a simple replacement, except for the upper window track mount. you will have to drill new holes in the door. you will also need to either shim the mount between the door, or try to bend the metal back into the door. the upper mounts need to be so deep, but where you have to drill, it isnt deep enough. and on another note, to take the passenger side door panel off, you must first take the switch out of the armrest, and take the wiring clip off. there is no other clip, so this may be a little difficult.

Parts you will need.

1. the door wiring harness. open the door, look where the door hinges are, and you should see a little rubber boot coming out of the door, and going into the body. pry the boot off of the plastic clip. pry the clip out of the body. undo the harness clip.

2. power window motor. just roll the window down far enough to see 2 bolts that hold the window onto the track. undo those bolts, and take the window out. there are three more bolts at the bottom of the door, and 2 nuts near the top. take those out. then just pull the motor and track out. you may need to move it around a little.

3. armrests. this is pretty easy. just pull the door panel off. look on the back, there should be three small black screws. just pull the screws out. the armrest should come right off then.

4. the switches. this pretty much explains itself.

Alright. you made it this far. now all you need to do is to take your door apart. exactly like you did when you pulled the power windows out of the other car. once you are done with that, you need to put the power harness into your door. that may be a little difficult for some. some wires may need to be lengthened also.especially if you are installing power door locks.(another howto for door locks I will write later) now when you have the door harness in place look at the clip coming from the door latch, it will have two wires. the clip may be different than the one on the new harness. THIS NEEDS TO BE HOOKED UP, or your seat belts will not move. it is the seatbelt actuator clip. all you need to do, is find the clip off of your old door harness, cut it off, and splice it into the new harness.

now that the harness is in place, you need to install the motor and track. the lower 3 holes will line up perfectly, but the upper two will not. this is a little tricky, as you need to line your new holes up to your old ones. but i found a little shortcut. when you drill the holes, drill about 1/2" to 3/4" wide. this means, take a 1/4 inch drill bit, and make you first hole. now make a couple of holes directly beside it.make sure they connect.you should have a hole a 1/4" high and however wide you decide to make it.

now install the motor. before you go any further you need to find out if your motor is good or not. just take the switch, and plug it into the harness, make sure your ignition is on, and see if the motor works. if it does, go ahead and reinstall your window.you should take the time to see if it is all lined up. if so, you can proceed to the next step.

now you have to install the armrest. this is simple, except, you have to make one little hole in your door panel. the front edge of the armrest must be screwed down, otherwise, it will rattle and move. make a hole in your door panel where the screw must go. put the armrest on, and make another hole for the wiring to come through to the switch. this hole must be pretty big to fit the clip and a little bit of wiring, for when you put the door panel back on.be sure that you do not make the hole to big to show outside of the armrest.

now all you have to do is reinstall every thing and move on to the other side. enjoy your new power windows. i will post pictures as soon as i can get ahold of a camera.

is there anyother window motor or regulator i can use besides a tracer because i'm having a hard time finding one.
I'd try using an appropriate year Mazda 2 Dr power window regularot/wiring assembly or a 3rd gen Escort/Tracer 2Dr power window stuff before I'd try using a 4Dr Escort as donor material. Don't know anyone who has done it yet and I might try next time I go to a junk yard.

OK I FOUND AN ESCORT WITH POWER WINDOWS AT THE JUNKYARD BUT ITS A 4DR. I GOT THE MASTER SWITCH AND TWO SINGLE SWITCHES. I WOULD LIKE TO USE THE MASTER SWITCH BUT HOW HARD IS IT TO DO WITH THE TWO DOOR WIRING? IF ITS TOO DIFFICULT I'LL USE THE TWO SINGLE SWITCHES.

ok, degree was a good friend of mine, he's no longer online. I will finish it for you...

First you will need the wiring harnesses for each door from the 4 door w/ power windows. Second, you will need motors of course. And third, if you want the passenger to have control over windows you will need the switch that goes to the pass side and the big cluster that goes to the drivers side. That big cluster....there's no way to replace it w/ anything else. You have to use it. Now, i had the smae problem, but i couldnt stand having that huge 4 switch cluster, so i just removed it and right now i cant roll down windows. I'm currently trying to remap the bread board so i can eliminate the pass side and 2 rear switches leaving only the drivers side. The reason i want to do this is so that i can mount my switches in the console just above the hand brake.

But if u dont care about having all 4 switches, you just need those 3 things i told you that you needed.

I think there are two different types of window regulator/motor combos. One where the motor is a separate piece, and another where the motor and regulator are one piece. At least that's what the online parts listings say. I have no idea if that makes any difference in how it fits (my guess is unlikely).
