I went to the local U wrench it today looking for some S/R struts/springs and I was wondering how to determine if a car has the S/R package. Does the vin tag in the door say something, any body badging or anything? I noticed that all the zx2's had tokico struts, but do the s/r's look different than the standard tokicos? Thanks

They probably look the same, I think it's just the internal valving that's a little different. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I thought I read that the S/R's had rear disc brakes, whereas the others did not, but I could be completely wrong on that. I'd check out the zx2 forums and ask someone there....

check the suspension bushings (LCA, sway endlinks, etc) if they are poly bushings, chances are pretty good it's an S/R. Not sure if they are red or black, obviously, if they are red, they are poly :)

s/r zx2 early were yellow. some later years they were red and black, they have c/f shifter, a darker grey interior, blue tokico struts, red eibach springs, poly bushing, though 99 the bushing were optional and came in a seprate bag sometimes, diffrent instument cluster, i think it was silver gauges, iceman intake i think , borla exaust and disc brakes. are some of the items.

look for the S/R badge on the side of the doors. the speedo went to 150mph, the seats had S/R embroidered on them usually.

the chances of finding one in a jy are very slim, but you never know. if you do, i want you to pull the rear muffler section for me, i'll pay you of course.

actually stock stuts on escorts were made by tokico, any escort i have found worked on or seen all the stock struts say tokico.

I'm gonna run by there again next week, they have a ton of escorts. I got a bunch of misc interior stuff for $6 today. If I find an s/r I'll be strippin' it!

They would work...but the valving is too slow and it would wear out a little on the fast side

the ZX2 struts ARE stock struts anyways! and their valving is very very similar to the 2nd gens setup.

Try a set of S/R struts...they can handle the faster rate (and they are cheap) or see if you can get a set of the Tokico "Blues" for the Escort GT. they handle the fast rate the best of the bunch (even though they don't have the shortened piston rod like the S/R's)

not true.

the S/R struts are designed specifically with the Eibach Pro kit performance springs in mind.

The HP Blues are designed with OEM stock springs in mind.

So the S/Rs will handle higher rates better than the HP Blues.

Just to clarify:
There are 3 different Tokico struts that will fit the escort:
Stock Tokicos that came on every escort that wasn't an S/R (Black paint)
'S/R Tokicos' that came stock on every S/R (Black paint)
Blue Tokicos that are aftermarket only (tokico blue paint)

Checked all the local yards today including the pick and pull. One place had about 20-25 zx2's but none of 'em were s/r's. Thought I had myself some mx3 seats for $20 at the pick and pull, car had only been there for 3 days, but someone had already gotten 'em. I'm goin back next week, they're supposed to be putting another mx3 out.

Found a set of s/r springs and struts used for $200, does that seem like a decent deal? Spring/Strut assemblies run $80/set at the pick and pull, but I wasn't sure what the going rate was 'cause they're usually a bit under what other places charge. Sorry for all the stupid questions, just tryin to rid the scort of the caddy ride! Thanks!
