I'm not in WV, but my mom was born there, to *too* far from you, near Oak Hill. If you've got any Boothes, Johnsons, or Showkeys/Shawkeys in your family tree, then we're probably distant cousins, because the family has been there since it was the western hills of Virginia Colony.... :)

IIRC, UnexplodedCow is from WV, up near the Ohio River, IIRC.

I'm up in Chicago but my 'grams' lives in Marietta OH and we take her over to the Olive Garden in Parkersburg.
Also, I usually crash over in the Days Inn right over the river in WV when I stay...
I should be getting out that way next month (6th of November)

Oh no, don't tell me they have started letting people from WV drive. Only kidding, but with all the jokes about people from WV I just couldn't resist. I'm just as bad I am originally from KY we get lots of jokes about us too.

Eh, I've seen more than enough bad WV drivers. They never know how to turn their brights down, or where their vehicle is relative to the road lines or shoulder. Tailgating and being passed isn't that bad, however. Fortunately I'm not originally from WV. I'm a transplant from Detroit. Yes, it was, and still is a culture shock living here.

I think a lot of the jokes are because it's a mountainous state and everyone thinks there's nothing but hillbillies and moonshiners in those hills. My brother use to live in NY and when he and his family were going to move to TN his step daughter ask him if they would have an inside bathroom or if they would have to go outside to use it.

I don't understand why hills would have anything to do with prejudice or assumptions. People living in the Rockies aren't considered hillbillies (that I'm aware of) by the rest of the US...just the Appalachian area.

Yes, I've seen plenty of bearded women here, zoophiles, and married siblings, but I don't think it's the norm (anymore). I have found, however, a gross lack of education, health care, money, good sense, and hygiene. There is also very little open-mindedness in my area. I can't speak for the rest of the state, and there are many areas I've not visited. The areas I have, however, are usually stricken with the above problems. A typical, logical argument explaining why things don't change is "my momma or daddy did it that way, and that's good enough for me." Of course there are also plenty of people clamoring for the south to rise again (I suggest Viagra). I've also noted heavy racism. My overview is that it's great to visit, but terrible to live here.
