I know the escorts can be interchanged with little work if you get the right years. Some years I believe the splines to the rack are different. Also the mount bushing could be different, easy enough to change. As far as the belt, if you run the 1.8L, just remove it, the power steering pump is all that is runs. I have removed by belt because of a bad pressure line for now and still have no issues with the power rack. I just drained the fluid out of the system. I also believe that the gear ratios in the rack itself is different in the manual racks, meaning more turns between locks.
No real clue on the Protege rack setup.
