With my 91 Ford Escort 1.9L engine, on a 1/3 mile highway grade asphalt oval track with 12 degree banking in the corners and 8 degree banking in the straights, we ended the season in 3rd place. Missed first place by 50 points. Ended up "Rookie of the Year" for our division.

Our first race, we qualified with a 20.7 second lap. We got it down to a consistent 18.2 second lap time. Mostly with playing with the setup, not the engine.

thats good stats, when we raced ours it was a (4/10th) mile oval clay and we ran a 1.8L dohc gt and we were turning lap times of 20.5. We finished first with three top 3's and one feature win but we only had 5 races and 2 races we ran a pinto and the other 3 we ran the GT and the races are 100 laps long.(out of the 450 laps that year we did like 445 or something like that and it was alll done in second gear :lol: )

We went from the 13 inch stock tires to the 14 inch tires to avoid the Rev limiter. Ran 2nd gear the entire race. Tried using 3rd gear, but it had no torque. I guess that is the down side of a 5 speed.

13th over all in points, missed to many nights, ran an 89 1.9L EGT on a mostly flat 1/4 mile paved oval with figure 8, they run us a different direction all the time so set up must be for road racing, sometimes we use the dog leg of the figure 8, 14"195/70's I shift 2nd and third and habe seen 21 second lap times but if i leave it in second the whole time lap times are 22 second,

I run a 91 escort LX at a 3/8 track, clay not much banking at all but its 90 feet wide. Have ran 5 wide around the corners. This was my first year racing and I only ran 6 times my worst finish in the feature was 10th my best was 5th so I am pretty consistant. The rules of the track are single overhead cam and you may lock the front end. Everything is suppose to be stock, we all no that this is not true for everyone. I never missed a single lap ...that just being lucky. There are a lot of hobby stocks when we race a field of 48 is common. Feature races only have around 20 cars in them. Tell me what you guys think I am considering building a 87 EXP to run next year and keep my 91 for a backup car. I found out that my 91 only has 88hp and exp is said to have 112 or so. Also I think the center of gravity and the weight of the exp would help me out as well. Not to mention that the price of the exp is nice too. A guy is going to give me one, and I have another guy who has a engine for 50 bucks with the tranny. 5sp of course. Wondering if anyone else is running a exp and curuious if they think if gives them an advantage.

I would use the 91 as the primary, but I would find a 2.0 SPI and put the 1.9 valve cover on it. I think you will be impressed at what that 2.0 can do.

Yeah I know it would be better, trying to do things cheap at the same time. I found an older 1.9 HO engine that I thought about putting that head on it. Haven't made up my mind yet.

Skagit Speedway Hornets

I started racing the Hornet class at Skagit Speedway this last season. Only caught the last 5 races, but that did include the 1st annual Hornet Nationals. I have a 94 Escort LX 2 dr. Factory 1.9L with new struts,springs, short shifter and a gen 1 1.9L HO header. We run on a 3/8 mile clay oval shared with the sprint cars. After the 1st night of heat races, I was 6th of 60 in points. The A main on Sat found me in 5th placetill I blew a tire, and ended up 15th. The rated horsepower on the LX is 88 at 3,800 RPM, hmmm. The gen 1 1.9L is rated at 115 at 4,800 RPM. Got a funny feeling they are real close at the same RPM since all the specs are the same for the cams, compression, etc. Not bad for a grocery getter against the likes of Preludes, Integras, and late model Escort ZX2's. did you have any issues putting the gen 1 head on the gen 2 engine? I thinking of doing that with my 91 lx. Did you use the newer or older intake as well?

I didn't swap the heads, just the header.
