I went out and got a new v-belt that isn't "cogged" and put it on the car. As soon as I started it, I could smell burning, see smoke and I knew the belt was on it's way out again. The tension seemed fine, but as a last bet I got out the old pry bar and after loosening the alternator up, I pushed it back as far and as hard as I could, held it, and tightened it back up. Started her up and runs great. I guess the amount of play that the Haynes manual calls for isn't actually right. I am waiting to see if the problem is that it keeps slipping forward though. If so, would I replace the bolt on the bracket/mount that is used to slide the alternator back & forth for tension or would I replace that bracket all together. I can't see how a new bolt or bracket would make any difference, but maybe one of you knows something more than I can guess by looking at it.
