I picked up a 1997 wagon last week. Overall the car is in solid condition and will serve its purpose of getting me back and forth to work cheaply. One issue I wanted ti fix was the hood not completely latching. I started to take the latch apart to lube it up and sent a spring into the engine bay not to be found 😡. I’m going to the junkyard this weekend in hopes the 97 they have still has its latch. If not, would a latch from a 98-03 work? The latch looks more like the 98 online too. A new latch for a 97-03 is $130, but a 98-03 is $22. See my attached picture. Honestly if the 98 would work I’d just order that and forego the junkyard. Thanks in advance!

The 98-03 latch is probably for the ZX2. You'll most likely need to find a 97-02 sedan or wagon to get a latch from.

What he said.

I just drilled down through two component part explosions for hoods.
The F7CZ part is for a vanilla Escort.
The F8CZ part is for a ZX2 (a different beast).

Thanks folks. Every car at the yard had their latch and it was in good shape. Replaced the latch and the release cable and we’re all good!
