I just sorted out a few probs and got my 91 GT running. Now, is the coolant temp supposed to get to almost the end of the gauge after letting it idle for 5 mins?I shut it off before that happened tho. I flushed out the radiator and changed the thermostat. My fan doesn't kick on but I saw the replies to Pipelines post and I'll check that out but still , should it get THAT hot THAT fast? Any help would be appreciated.

Your fan should kick on before the guage goes past the middle,
then it cools the engine down. That is how it should work. 8)

Have you checked the coolant temperature sensor? There are two of them on the GT and pre- 1995 LX's. One is used for the fan. The connector or electrical contacts might be dirty. That or a relay.

Thanks guys for the replies. SmoothL , the relay shouldn't be too much and you can install that yourself since it's in engine bay fuse box on the driver's side and it just plugs in. I'll probably have to replace that too . No, ZZ I didn't get to check the sensor yet but the connections are clean. Hard to believe that sensor is 30 bucks!! Thanks again guys.

I had to replace mine a while ago because my fan would not kick on. It was located on the engine itself, i think it was green, but soon as i replaced it my car was fine.

Not that I would wish this on my worst enemy, but I just replaced the water pump in my '91 GT. After I did this, apparently the coolant started flowing better and I found two coolant lines busted out and sprayed very hot coolant around the engine compartment which melted a few things, but not too bad. I replaced the two hoses and now the temp gauge only goes about a third of the way up and runs right there whether idle or at speed. Before, it would climb during idle and come back down at normal engine speed. This made me think that the water pump was bad because why else would the temp come down when the engine is rev'd. Plux91, does the temp come down if you just rev the car? If it does, the fan probably isn't the problem, nor a sensor. Unfortunately, you may have to look into a water pump. Let me tell you though, that is a headache and a half. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks Vinman, I completely forgot about the water pump being an issue. I have a good feeling that your right since I had the relay and the sensor checked by a pool customer who "just happens" to fix electronic equip on the side. I kinda wish it was the relay tho since I change the belts alreadyand I'm not looking forward to redoing everything I just did. Oh [email protected] Well!! Yes SmoothL thats the price the guy gave me since I have no time to search the junk yards. Look in the junkyards first if you have one near you before you pay full price for it. Thanks everyone for your help.
