Hi. I am just starting to want to customize my 1998 Ford Escort SE. Right now it is strictly stock. I'm thinking about adding a cold air intake, exhaust, and 17" rims... but I have not started anything yet.... in fact my BF and I were tlaking last night, and decided there is no reason why I shouldnt turn my car into something I am proud of. Right now it's just a 5 spd, 2.0 L, 4 cyl. and even stock it smokes the tires..

Anyone got any suggestions?

Nice name, nice car. word of advice, if you're into performance and you're putting a cai and exhaust, don't put on heavier 17" rims. put on some lightweight 14s or 15s. You can find them as low as 10-11 lbs per rim. Thats good for around 4 pounds weight savings at each corner.

Well I am hoping to start with a few repairs that need to be made first. For instance, my reverse lights stay on as long as the car is on. Wether I am in reverse or not. And a cracked windsheild, I have heavily tinted windows on the rear windows, I'm hoping for a top tinted windsheild I live in AZ and the sun can be totally intense at times, I am also hoping to do something about the audio system, I have the stock cassette player and speakers, the cassette is DOA, and the drivers speaker is deveoping a rather irritating rattle.

Anyone know WHY my reverse lights stay on? I've checked the switch on the tranny, and tested the electrical system.... but after that I ran out of ideas and just took the bulbs out to keep from getting pulled over anymore.

I actually don't think the lights were tampered with. I bought the car last May 2003, and come February 2004, I'm getting pulled over left and right for having my "rear lights on" around the third time I got pulled over, I asked the cop what the hell he was talking about, and got out of the car.... sure enough my reverse lights were on! I took the car to my BF's and on the way there, if I used my right turn signal, my cruise control shut off! But after I finally gave up and removed the reverse lights, and my cruise control/turn signal stopped malfunctioning. <shrug>

I spose I could take it in... but I'd rather diagnose and fix it myself.

^words to live by!

Props to you for wanting to figure things out on your own. You may want to check all your fuses, make sure they're all running their designated types. Check to make sure you don't have any exposed wires in the bay, under the dash, and in the tail light assembly. Other than that I'm not sure...make sure you have the right bulbs in there as well. My gf's Saturn's left brake light stopped lighting up a while back, the tail light would come on, but it wouldn't get brighter when the brakes were hit. I replaced the bulb with what the manual said I should use, and now the brake light stays on at full brightness when the lights are on and nothing happens to that light when you hit the brakes...not quite sure how to fix that yet.

I'm so proud of James right now :D

I'd reccomend 15s over 14s because it's hard to find good sticky tires for 14s. 15" Kosei racing rims or 15" Rotas would look good and be super light (and reasonably priced) to give you some good performance benefits. Just don't skimp on the tires.

Last night I went CAI shopping, I was told that for my car A 1998 Escort the CAI for my car is basically just a cone filter... I was told I would have to fabricate one with the tube.. which I can do, that isn't a problem, but you would think there would be an install ready CAI for my car... Anyone know of one?

Yeah, that's the way to go if you got money. If you don't, take the airbox/filter housing and old filter off, liquid nails your MAF housing shut so it doesn't fall apart (the clips on mine were broken) and there should be like a 'lip' on it that's exactly the right size for a cone filter. You get most of the gains from the CAI out of that. I'd still like a real one, but eh. I'll take what I can get.

Ok, dumb question, 1998 Ford Escort ZX2... 1998 Ford Escort SE... I was told the ZX2 parts and SE parts are not interchangable... ??????

Most parts for the engine won't be as you have the 2.0 SPI if I am not mistaken and the ZX2 has a Zetec engine... but you should still be able to upgrade other things like suspension and other systems I would imagine. If I can put the struts from a ZX2 into my 2nd Gen GT then I would think you would be able to as well. Try talking to the people from ZXTuner.com and seeing what will and will not be able to be upgraded to the ZX2 gear, it will pretty much always be better than the stock SE gear unless it is just for appearance... Best of luck and Welcome to FEOA (I know I'm late with the welcome, but better late than never right?)
