my 89 escort gt 1.9HO , the tranny is what messed up.. a gear broke and blew thru the casin on the inside. big ass hole. I got another tranny low miles to put in it from a 89 escort gt.. for 170 bucks. droppin it in as soon as i get the presssure plate for the clutch tomorrow from a friend. my clutch is still real good, the pressure plate is just a bit worn, n i dont want to end up having to take apart the car again just to replace the clutch n etc. so im going to take care of it now. Everything else is perfect, the engine runs real strong @ 153k miles on it. I was going downhill before it broke and was in neutral and shifted to 3rd when i reached the bottom so i could get up a hill that was on the bottom.... i guess i was going to fast for 3rd gear n it spun 3rd gear so fast shit decided to break. anyone experince that kinda trannyt problem before? lol i can drive standard i just got to learn what gear to be in at certain speeds. anyone know where i can find out? thanks. peace
like if im doin over 40 mph i should be in 4th at least right? i have a 5 speed.

Umm.. unless there is a mjor difference in the way trannys were built (which I don't think there were) in the four years between my GT and yours then I don't think you need ot be in 4th to go 40... I hit 40 before I even hit 4500 RPM with my car in 2nd... I think going 40 in third is fine, it should bring the engine up to about 3K-3500 RPM I would think...

But then again, that's just how I drive, and give just a bit of gas after depressing the clutch before downshifting, it makes it a smoother transition, and keps the clutch alive a bit longer. Anyways, I was never really taghut what speeds ot what Gears, I just figured it out by te speeds I was hitting at the end of each gear. I try to downshift into gears at least 5-10 MPH lower than the top speed I hit in that gear.

Hope this helps a bit.

when i want to top speed my car i always wrap third out and its usually around 80(i cant remember exactly what speed i shift out of, i just know its somewhere near 80)

But, your gears were not spinning(correct me if i'm wrong) so going from 0 revolutions to what 3rd gear equals out to, i could see you fuckin it up

omg , i didnt know that the gears wouldnt be spinnin, but it makes sense. damn... My dad always shift into netural in spots he can roll 2 a stop sign. I shouldn't have shifted to neutral down the hill n then into 3rd to get up the hill, i should have stayed in gear. i mustve went from neutral(no gears spinning) to 3rd, n causing 3rd to have alot of pressure on it, causin it to snap. Hmm.... . but when i want to throw it into neutral like coasting n im doin like 40mph , how can i get back into gear from neutral so i can speed up? without fukin the tranny up?

I just checked my clutch out its in real good shape but the pressure plate is worn, now i only was driving this car for 5 days so there is no way i couldve worn it down. besides i dont ride the clutch. now what i am gonna try to do is bring the pressure plate to a machine shop and have them put medal on the wear and sand it down even. because the junkyards don't have a used good one, and some junkyards say u gotta buy it with a clutch kit new. n i dont need the clutch or the throw out bearing or none of that, i just need the pressure plate. tryin to save loot. anyone know where they sell pressure plates by themself tho?

92gt5spd... you're wrong. the gears are still turning, if the wheels are moving your gears are turning. what happens when you shift is that the engine is no longer connected to the drivetrain, and you usually let your RPMS drop, as you know low RPM's means that the crank is moving slowly for the speed you are now travelling. that is why I said when you downshift try to give a quick tap of gast to bring your RPM's closer to the RPM's that your engoine will be making at your current speed in your choice of gear. (if the gear even hits that speed, which is why I said study your gear top speeds)

Example: let us say that I downshift to third gear from fourth while going 50 MPH. in fourth I am doing approximately 3000-3400 RPM, in 3rd I will be doing closer to 4500 RPM. when you hit the clutch your Tach drops, right, so now I press the gas t obring my car up to about 3500-3800 RPM, then ease the clutch out with the car now going into 3rd. This makes the transition much easier on the engine, clutch and drivetrain.

And you can be lucky and drop into a gear at really high speeds and not blow your trans, I was not paying attention on my way to high school one day and accidentally dropped into Second on a downhill that had sped me up to 50, I took the car up to about 3K RPM, and then eased out, well, it was still a big difference from that to 50 in my second, so it hit really hard when it engaged the gears, but my trans was fine, My Clutch on the other hand, didn't last much longer, although I don't really know if it was all from that or just the fact that the clutch was pretty old.

Anyways, moral of this post is that your gears still move and your engine during shifting isn't moving as fast as it does at speed... SO, just tap the gas a bit and you should be fine. also, be sure not ot just pop the clucth out, always try to ease it out, which i'm sure you do because you love your Escort...
