Friend of mine has had some bad luck this year. Between falling asleep (working graveyard) crashing his suburban into a cement truck. The engine in his Hyundai blew, he was fired from work for 3 days. He’s had a bad stream of luck. So he’s gonna pay me for my labor and parts so we’re helping each other. Wanting to do things extremely cheap I found a 98 escort in aquamarine. It had a blown head gasket supposedly. Although the head was missing in the sale of the car. So who know what really happened? Whoever took it apart broke the ear off the intake so that’s not gonna seal properly (hack job).
I went to the salvage yard and I found a crashed 98 so in theory this car ran while in the accident. So i scored the cylinder head for $90 bucks with the lifters, rockers, cam and cam sensor. I also took the intake from the wrecked car ($50)so now that fixes that issue . I still dropped the head off to my machine shop to make sure the head test good and if it had hardened seats in it or not . The engine in that car was bored oversize so I’m sure everything was reworked but I want to make sure everything is on the up and up.

It's kind of late now, but why didn't you just buy the whole engine from the junkyard?

As others have pointed out, if there was a dropped seat on the old engine, there is probably also piston damage.

Anyhow, hopefully the engine will come together nicely and your friend will get a good car.

Well it was a budget issue. My friend also has to move from the father in-law house they were renting. The father in law got a cash offer on the house and sold it and told them they got 30 days to move .he found a new house to rent but the security deposit and first and last month rent he had to come up with so the budget is not a lot. So far 550 in the car and that with everyone that should be needed besides oil and coolant. The complete engine would of been another couple hundred.
The head cam back that the exhaust valves were leaking and needed a mill so 150 bucks to fix.

Thinking it over, with no engine hoist the whole engine would have been problematic.

A couple years ago I bought a head from a junkyard for $60 and the yard owner suggested I buy the whole shebang for $200 but I also declined. And then I had to buy a gasket set etc. so probably didn't save much money.

The short block I have in this car was good , just missing the head . Getting the complete engine wouldn’t of been to bad but in the end it’s still all un known thing with a car in the scrap yard . The end result the head needed a little work to get it 100 percent correct.

Got the head back from the machine shop. Freshly rebuilt and ready to go. I got plans the next few days with my kids , then Laughlin this weekend. So I’ll most likely have it running Tuesday.

Well the wife had us do a lot more things than I anticipated. As a family we all had a great time . Laughlin and a camping trip.
I got the head on the car the other day. Exhaust , valve terrain in , valve cover. I ordered a new water pump it should be in this evening. So I’ll put it in tomorrow with the timing belt.

Some crazy wind this last couple days. I managed to do a brake job for a different co-worked today. Also put a new window switch in which required removal of the complete door panel on a 2014 traverse.
Today for Saturday I’m going shooting at the range so I’ll get back on the scort this Sunday.

Got some more progress today. It’s getting close to running. Got the new water pump in, thermostat and housing, electrical connections and intake manifold.
Next will be timing belt , alt hoses and coolant.

Today was slow since I was gonna take my room mates car in to fix his tire. So I wasn’t able to complete everything.
I got the hoses in, changed the oil and filter set the timing up. Organized some of my tools while I waited for him to get home from work .
I found the wagon ford escort I’ve been looking for . It’s pretty clean inside and out. My wife’s not on board me getting it but it’s a deal I can’t pass up. I’m gonna try to convince her . Her argument is we both have new cars. I just wanna swap a zx2 dohc motor in it . This one was bad valve seat damage and parts went through the oil pan. We will see, I’m hoping I can pick it up this Saturday.

That's what I've been looking for in southern CA so I can drop in the 2.0 spi motor and trans I have into it. Then I'll drive it home to Chicago on a Rte 66 leasurely tour.

I even got the guy to 225 for the car. The money isn’t the issue . She just doesn’t like old cars . I kinda wanted it for a parts car for the wrecking yard since I do so much side work. Even mobile mechanic possibly. If I do it with my truck it will eat a lot of gas .

Some bozo messed with the firing order and it wouldn’t run initially. I immediately know from the way it sounded. Backfire/popping , So I fixed the wire routing and it fired right up. I’ve built 6 of these cars so I guess I’m a expert in the escort. Lol
So now I’ll drive her a bit , she hasn’t been on the road for a year. Fresh gas and a smog will be in order .

Let us know how she runs! Question, for slight valve noise, is it as easy as taking off the valve cover, removing the lifters and trying to clean out the cam passage? I hate the sound of marbles bouncing in my motor.

If you have marble sounds it may be valve seat falling out which is the most common thing on the sohc 2.0
The lifters are roller and should not need any cleaning.

Got her finished today . As soon as I got the wires in the correct location she fired right up.
I dove the car a few times around the block . No leaks of oil or coolant so we are good to go. I notified my friend I built the car for and he is extremely excited to have this gas saver.
