I went to a local repair shop today to get my oil changed and the guy took me out and showed me that my "Flexpipe" needs to be replaced. He said the teathering on the outside is gone and that it is now exposed to the elements and will eventually leak. He said he could cut it off on both sides and reweld one for $150.

He said if I don't do it in a week or two it will cost me $450 for a new exhaust!

I saw on a search that it should cost me $75 or something, but what are your opinions? Should I get it done? Is this a really common repair? Should I try and do it?

Thank you to all replies, and for looking

What part of his BS didn't you get on his sales pitch? Yes it should be replaced, but why would you need a whole new exhaust once there is a hole in it? Just go to reputable exhaust shop and have the flexpipe replaced when you get around to it and can afford it.

Your exhaust will get louder. If the hole isnt very big you may not notice a big difference in sound at first but if you get under the car and see any black carbon on the outside of the flex pipe that means you have a leak.

I've been having the same issue with my flex pipe. The flex pipe doesn't have a hole in it but the weld has come off from I'm guessing the header. Took the escort to a garage and the guys said I would need a new flex pipe and muffler, he said the cost would be around $320.00. I have been driving with the flex pipe like this for about 2 years but to muffle the noise I put two brackets around the pipe and criss crossed them, eventually it will loosen and you will have to tighten them back up. I need a cheap, easy and permanent fix.

i don't think ur muffler needs replacing, just get the flex pipe rewelded. it shouldn't be that expensive.
