hi my name is mike and i think i finally found a site that may be able to help.I live in Connecticut so the winters are hell on the bodys of cars.this is my 3rd escort that ive owned and the bodys went before my engines did. Each one had over 175k on it.Right now i have a 96 wagon with 132k on it 1.9L .ive read some of the ?s from other members who seem to be having my same problem with bucking while driving and stalling at idle.my check engine lite has been on and i was able to get the codes from a friends scanner but i have no code book to go by.The codes are 0171,1130,1131and1443. I dont know what they mean.but by reading fellow owners problems I did look for vacuum leaks on the hoses and did find a split on the hose thatat the elbow of the pcv hose that comes out of the top of valve cover??? and goes down to the pcv valve it self.replaced it but made no difference.Another thing i noticed is when i accelerate hard it sounds like i have the wrong octane gas (pinging like its out of time).I hope someone out there can give me a clue of what to do or look for.

Thank you for your time
Mike

I would help but I have no clue so I'm going to make a wild stab in the dark... have you checked your IAC Valve?

I know the 1.9s are notorious for pinging in warm weather. Which is weird because they're designed to run on the lowest octane fuel possible.

All you need is a repair service manual found at a parts store, I would look the codes up for you but I'm at work, the book is at home. If I have time I'll look them up for you later in the day.
If I remember correctly those code's look like EGR and O2.
O2 sensor should be changed every 60k for top performance and drivability.

hello all, i'm also new to the site. i just got my frst car a few weeks ago, it's a 94' Escort GT, 5-speed manual, power moonroof, and i LOVE the wheels. it's only got 63K on it, so it's still fairly new to the world lol. i'm 17 years old, and i couldn't be happier with any other car. BUT. the previous owner, tells me he got about 25-30 mpg with it. however, i've been averaging it out, and it's giving me an average yield of 13.5 mpg city........ my dad's 5.4L gets better than that. i usually don't take it up above 3000 rpms..... and 3000 is a rare occurence at that....... but i can't figure it out...... any ideas???

your GT needs a tune up, badly. It may have only 63k miles on it but the 9 years have been harder on it than the mileage.

check your electrical system, plugs, wires, distributor, coil, alternator, battery etc. Then check your fuel pump and filter and clean your injectors. Then take off the restrictors from your intake. I did that and I noticed I'd get upwards of 4 mpg BETTER in the city. (I used to get 17 mpg till I put on my cone filter, 21 city after all that was said and done).

Just a few things...even tho you're young you must have some change layin around. :p

thanks for the help :D
on another note, i forgot to add this, i went in to murray's auto and they had this octane booster, called "NITRO" in cool looking letters lol the bottle said it would treat 16 gallons of gas, and it would instantly add up to 25 horsepower, it was specifically made for compact cars. has anybody tried this stuff??? if so, what kind of results did it give you?

Don't believe it. an Octane booster just ups the octane rating of the fuel in your tank, keeping your engine from pinging if you accidently put too low of octane in. Like my Civic Si needs at elast 91 octane. the booster would up the octane past that which doesn't hurt. but it won't give you extra hp.

Hey welcome all...if you ask questions more then likely everyone will answer right away. I can asure you that the greater then the majority of people on the site here are quite mechanically inclined and usually have all the right answers.

Sometimes you'll have to put up with me typing an essay on everything you can think about..but its just because school has stopped metally engaging me

welcome to both of you. Sorry don't have my shop manual CD handy or I'd look up the codes as well. someone out there has it though!

as for the younger fellow. I'd do like James says. Your first car is a great time to learn. And you picked a great car to do it with. I'd give it a total tune up. If you need help deciding on what replacement parts are quality let me know I'd be happy to suggest stuff (even if it isn't from my inventory). Now in my oppinion there is only one thing that should go in your fuel tank. That is a fuel injector cleaner. The chevron stuff is the best if I remember correctly. Do not add anything to the oil, tranny or gas! Octane booster as stated above is a good way to work around a problem until it gets repaired. However it isn't a solution. It sure as hell won't add HP.

There is a lot of bad info out there on engines and cars in general. If you are serious about cars and performance I highly suggest both car craft and hotrod magazines. Hotrod is now including sport compacts which IMHO is a great thing. They are both mostly if not all V8 but they contain a lot of great info for someone starting off.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask [email protected]

A lot of those power additives for the gas are like 2-cycle enging oil. If you have a lot of miles on the motor, the rings leak a bit of the compression out. The addative makes the fuel charge a bit thicker, so less compression leaks past, making it feel like it has more power.
But in reality, it only has what should be there to begin with.
But do not condem octane booster. It is very helpful when you have a higher compression motor and are travelling. You can not always get good gas in some remote areas.
As far as the 1.9 pinging. It can be that you do not drive the car hard enough. (lol)
They tend to get a buildup of carbon on top of the pistons if you are always babying them. And that raises the compression and can cause it to ping. Also lugging the motor in too low of a gear will cause it. You should always be going over 3000 rpm with your cars. If not, chances are you are lugging the engine down. Which will cause it to burn more gas, and the detonation can cause you to blow the motor. They are only small displacement 4 cylender engines. They dont make there power till around 3000+ rpm.

I don't get to drive my car for many long journeys and I did get a build up of soot which cleared itself recently on a long fast motorway drive. You say I/we should drive our cars at 3000 revs., but mine seems to be really low-reving. Even doing 60mph in third gear, it only reaches 3000. It's idle speed is just on the 1000 mark and during 'normal' driving, it rarely exceeds 2000. Do I have a problem? :? I don't use additives of any kind and run it on Super-unleaded. The car is very quiet and quick and is regularly serviced.

(PS: Sorry if this post is not in the correct section - I just followed on from the previous. )

if you guys want an idea of my car, think of TheBlade's car, with the stock GT wheels from 94........ anyways, the thing about my driving, i drive it to school and back....... i live like 3 minutes away from school..... can't be good on the engine........ it doesn't even get a chance to warm up....... but, tomorrow i'm taking it to get an oil change........ i'm thinking most likely i'll put a semi-synthetic blend in it....... sound good?? i also filled my tank up the other day and recalculated my mileage, and it was about 15.2 mpg. getting a little better. the octane booster sounded like somebody made up a load of you know what, and printed out a label. (lol) ok.... so for my next tank, just add some of that chevron fuel injector cleaner? and as for the car magazine comment, i AM a subscriber to both MOTOR TREND and TRUCK TREND.... so it's a bit of a start...... as i go on i'll pick up some more subscriptions :D
since i bought (my dad bought really lol) the car, i haven't had it going faster than, we'll say 50mph...... city driving is a pain with a stick, especially in rush hour lol. also, i've noticed, when the tires are spinning, the front end seems to sidetrack, making it hard to pull out into traffic from a turn around lol (hey, it was raining.... what can i say?? lol) i'd LOVE to do all the work on this car myself, but i just don't have the time. school is killer, and my parents want me to get a job. i haven't worked since i was 15 (once again, school is killer) and i REALLY hate college applications lol so much to do, so little time GRRRRR!!!!!!!!![/u]

well, i can't answer those questions but, is this the first stick that you've driven? my 91 pony was, and my first city mileage was 29, 2nd was 31, and 3rd was like 34 or 35. it was all pretty much in a hilly city. It seems like the better you get at driving a manual the better mileage you get.
