I hope the timing belt has been changed. Its to be replaced each 100,000 miles. Otherwise it will eventually break, and leave you stranded. And along with the timing belt, its a good idea to replace the belt tensioner - as that has a ball bearing in it that will also wear out. Lots of folkks also replace the water pump at the same time as the timing belt. This is because you have to remove the timing belt to replace the water pump - so you are saving the labor. And the lower radiator hose is good to replace at this time, as its Hard to Reach the rest of the time.
I do all of my own repair/maintenance work, and changing the timing belt takes me part of one day and part of the next. But I also clean around where I am working. I think a mechanic could do it in 3 or 4 hours.
Good Luck with your Escort.
