if this isn't sticky worth i don't know what is. of COURSE i just stumble upon this right after i finish doing mine. i really wish i had watched this beforehand.
he did a good job, and having done it like 2 or 3 times already myself I will say there were many points in that video that I was telling myelf I would have no idea what he was talking about if I had not done it myself.... all in all it was a good video, I think its easy for me not to be overwhelmed getting into a project that big while others just need to be shown how panles come off and where nuts and bolts are because sometimes they can be hard to find...
I would definitely change one step. He says to pry either side of the defroster trim plate up. This can damage the dash, especially if you have a red or blue dash. Red/blue dashs crack easily, the others can dent. The easier way is to remove the caps from either side of the dash, and use a screwdriver to push up from the underside, which saves the dash. I've swapped all 3 2nd gen dash styles into my blue car, and I did it that way every time... no damage at all.
I have always said, that who ever put the heater core on the drawing board down in and under the dash board in Detroit. Should be taken out and shot to death. It made no sense for the car makers to do something as crazy as putting the heater core where it is hell to get to it.
I'm wondering how do you even get to the heater hoses to remove them from the core on a gen 1... remove the engine?? it's so tight in there I can't even get a tool on them....
My carpet has been a little damp on the passenger side for 6 months.
Im going to be replacing mine in my 2000 scort within the next couple weeks.
Ill try to take some photos of the process.

when I first saw this video I was shocked and decided that I'd go without heat... then the winters passed and with little more than tepid air im hardly be able to see out my windshield...
now that I've replaced the front hard brake lines and they are loose not fitting in the old holders, I'm going to go with that other guy and attempt to cut through the fire wall and pull it out that way.
Though i wish the fire wall method was as well documented.
the escort heater core is about the easiest one you can do. last one i did took about 2 hrs with hand tools. 1.5 with electric tools. its really not that complicated.
alldata calls for 5.2 hrs. but that is an overshot.
my guess is you do this for a living or serious hobby at least, but why do I get the impression that you wouldn't touch my heater core for 1.5 hours pay...
well anyway seems many of us mere mortals here need quite some time to get it done... so if it takes you 90 minutes I should be able to get it out the fire wall in about 90 seconds with my angle grinder... :whistling:
When I did mine on my '97 it took me 10 hours straight, only stopping for pee and snack breaks.
This was very cold in January with a tiny propane Buddy Heater keeping me just above freezing lol, and my OCD going very very slowly and putting the screws back on / in to whatever part I had just removed to keep track of them.
Having done it, the sense of accomplishment was worth it. I too was very apprehensive of the job and considered cutting the firewall.
But in all honesty, all the hype online that it's this horrible thing to do, too difficult, etc, etc is BS. Don't get me wrong IT IS 100% A PAIN IN THE ASS JOB, but if you can change an alternator or something you can do a heater core. Just break the big job into sections that are able to be accomplished. Remove ashtray, you can do that. Remove radio. You can do that. Drain coolant. You can do that. And on & on till you're done.
Priorities on time i guess, I got OCD too, and bad, and its no longer worth the time in my life/benefit...
Besides, i hardly find its the remove this, drain that thats the problem, its mostly putting these plasticy things back together the right way that irritates me...
i can drop the dash in an escort in about 30 minutes....with out breaking anything. i did one in a JY once in under 20. they are the easiest i have seen.
alldata calls for 5.2, so say average tech makes $20/hr, that's little over 100$. minus taxes, probably around 75$... so if i do it at 180 for 1.5 hrs... 120$ an hr not too shabby.
heater core p/n
F1CZ18476A $98.32 plus store markup of half is 147.48
(dealer buys parts from ford at their cost, must mark it up to make a profit)
gallon of coolant (dealership pricing) 30$
5.2 hrs x 121.95=634.14
811.62$ is what the dealer would charge as a base price, depending on area.
so doing it for 180$ would save the cust 631.62$
