Highly doubtful that only the valves are damaged. Even if the pistons are OK, you are probably looking at lifters, a cam, head machining... If you really think you can do the job, get a repair manual ($15 or less) and pull it apart, measure everything and replace what you need to, and take it somewhere for a valve job and put it back together. It's not like changing a tire, so be prepared to spend money and get your hands dirty. But pay attention to detail, theres nothing like doing a job like that twice because you forgot to tighten something or reused a bad part...

If it were me, I'd either get a rebuilt head or find a decent one at a salvage yard, depending on what the car's worth.

my first question is... how sure are you your valves or bad? is this a GT or an LX? what year? The 2gen GTs use the Mazda BP motor which is a non-inteferance engine... meaning there is almost no way for there to be damage when the timing belt goes. The ford CVH engine which is in the 1st gen LX, GT as well as the 2gen LX I believe is also a non-inteferance engine. But I wouldn't bet money on it. Someone with an LX will have to confirm for me.

So like I said if someone else tells you this is the case I'd be willing to bet they are wrong. Unless you know first hand.

Niether the 1.8 nor 1.9 is interference. There's no way you bent the valves unless something else went wrong. From your name you have a maxima, not an escort? That could explain the bent valves .
