Well im having some work done to my avenger so i took it off the road and put the escort back....i figure also i can drive around with the for sale signs and it would sell quicker than sitting on my front lawn.....but i go to put it in reverse and it like slams/jumps into reverse :? my dad says that shouldnt be.....the new transmission has like maybe 300 miles at most on it :? it also stutters when shifting from 1st to 2nd other than that it shifts perfect and drives fine....it cant be the transmission again if it is i might just have to kill somebody

look at your clutch line...see for leaks(may cause loss of pressure for the actuator for the clutch fork), also look in the fork boot if there is a lot of clutch residue(the powder from the clutch) see if there is alot and that means your clutch is going but as you said you got a new tranny and mostlikely a clutch kit, also look in your master cylinder...you may need to put more brake fluid(slave cylinder), also see you pedel for play(pedal flooring, etc.)...well hope i got something of use for you and have fun......

my tranny also slamms into reverse as well. but i just wait a few seconds for it to change and NOT touch the gas. i think it's just how the escort and (some) other car trannies are.. my buddy's alero is like that, and other friend's nissan (all auto).

but the only car i've noticed that is quick to swicth gears (from reverse to drive and such) is jeep. i think it's mostly because say if you were teetering on the edge of a cliff, and you nee to back up now, that way it's quick and precise. as where an alsero or escort aren't going to need that quickness, because how often do you go offroading with it??

Yeah both of my 5 speed cars were hard shifts into reverse especially if I went directly from 1st to reverse even if I was rolling backwards. Helps out a lot if you go out to neutral, pop it into first and go to reverse fairly fast, don't know why but it makes it smoother that way.

No one is talking about 5speeds, but thanks for the useless info.

Sittinlo - Drive it some more, autos (torque converters) need a break in period just like 5spds do, and driving it for 300 miles and parking it in your front yard doesn't exactly help this situation. Is it supposed to slam into gears? Of course not. Why is yours doing it? That, I can only assume..

it sounds to me that you're not waiting long enough for the gear to click into place before you hit the gas. (ie. shift-GAS!!, and not shift...wait a second...gas..)
it sounds to me like you dont know what your talking about i dont touch the gas until the car starts rolling backwards......try again later thankyou.it doesnt even matter tho because the transmission is dead again.

No, I really have tried. It's indestructable with a fairly stock engine.
i agree, i used to do all kinds of terrible things to my tranny back in the day, and it still (knock on wood) works great.

dude, just because it rolls back, doesn't always mean that it's in reverse yet. you could be on an incline, or it could be the momentum of the car shifting from front to back from a stop.. i know i have at least a clue to what im talking about...
