Well one day i was at work and i asked one of our guys that work here if he could do an engine swap on my escort....he was like what gen escort is it and i told him second. Then he asked what kind of motor did i want to put in it and i told him that i wanted a gtx motor swapped in and i started to explain to him what a gtx motor was and he was yeah i already know what it is. I was suprised....then he started going in detail of what i needed to do to make the swap. So i figured that was pretty cool....i might actully have him do the swap for me or i could spend 1200 on getting my a/c fixed. Which would be better.

Major, you have a GT, right?

$1200 sounds very steep for the A/C. If you're going to buy all new stuff, then conversion to the new coolant would only cost a few bucks (the conversion is nothing more than a couple O-ring seals). It's not like the A/C parts are rare, so you could probably pick up used stuff in great condition, install a conversion kit and have it charged for less than a quarter of that price.

Screw A/C, it just slows you down any ways
Rip out the A/C completely, and take your $1200 and either turbo your GT or get the GTX, trust me you'll be happier running 13's with your windows down instead of 15.9 with your A/C.

A/C is over rated. go GTX, hell if you feel real adventurous go GTR! 180hp with 180ft-lb is nice and a good boost contoller, cone filter and frontmount IC you will see 200. personally i ripped out my A/C. weight save and makes room for a future intercooler.

GTR 220HP ~ 200ft-lb, stonger BP block and interals VJ23 turbo... (australia)

Is the GTX a turbo engine, what is the GTR? I'm just starting to work on mine and would like to get as power as I can. The only thing I've come up with is switching over to the GT engine from the LX.
The GTX and GTR are BPT's sks turbocharged 1.8L mazda engines. the GTR is the BPT of BPT engines. first gen protege guys drool over these engines, and i would go on a diet of oats if i could get my hands on one. it has 40hp over the GTX's 180hp, better interals, lower static compression, higher flowing head, more boost, bigger turbo, stronger block. same mounting points an mates to the same trannys as any BP engine.

AS for the A/C vs BPT issue... what issue, have the A/C discharged professionally,($80) and swap for the GTX. A/C is useless, and why not weightsave? you can get adventerous and remove the A/C hardware yourself.

Will A/C and a GTX motor not fit under the hood together?

I ripped the non-functioning A/C out of my old BMW (that I drove to school in Florida in) and enjoyed the weight savings... but to hear a Canuck say A/C is useless is funny to me.. very funny. :p

I say go for the best of both worlds when dealing with a street car.. work on getting some power, and fix up the A/C as cheaply as possible. Weight savings are the end-all-be-all when you're talking about max performance, but comprimises must made when dealing with a daily driver.

I have found several GTX engines in 88 mazda 323's, are these usable or do I have to get them somewhere else?
These GTX engines you found...are they in North America? if so they're 1.6L GTX engines...

The 1.8s everyone was talking about were the japanese (JDM) versions.

I'll take out a loan for the cost of the entire car and personally come up to get it if I can. Where are you? where? 323 GTXs are RARE as hell. I want one so 91sleeper won't be the only one on feoa with one :D

As far as I know the 323 GTX puts out 180 hp out of that 1.6, but I bet with a little tweaking 200 hp isn't far off, plus it's awd.

find me one in good shape wiht decent miles and I'll definitely try to get it.

I always wondered that myself man. I don't know if it would fit. I have no clue what the dimensions of the 323 GTX are. (ie wheelbase, length, width, etc) Besides that you'd have to do some major fabrication to clear a path for the drivetrain.

I'd take the one with the blown turbo, I have a Garrett T3 sitting here...it'd be easier than tryin to fix up my engine for a turbo, and I have 95k miles on it too.

Edit: Are these all 5 speeds or automotics? if you can find one that's a 5 sp for a decent price I'd buy it.
