Yes, for those of you who are thinking of doing this swap, I'd recommend selling off that 93-96 tranny if thats what u have, and picking up a 91-92.

I have to shift to 4th gear, almost 5th in the 1/4 mile. Having to shift at *roughly* 35, 55, 80, 100ish is pretty rediculous and would probably make me significantly slower in the 1/4 because of all the shifting I have to do.

When I start cranking the boost and breaking 100mph in the 1/4, I'll probably HAVE to shift to 5th, IF I can make it down the track fast enough having to shift 4 times.

91-92 transmissions apparently have much taller gears. So yea, ditch that 93-96 transmission :(

yes the G25M is stronger and whatnot, but it may be a fair tradeoff see how the G5M is nice and strong as it is, and that shifting fiasco is a whole lot of crap.

adams right, that much shifting with those gears is such a huge bummer. the fun part is when youve got full boost and you can hold out the gear for a long while and feel the pull.

I ran 110mph in 4th gear befor in the 1/4mil. but that was hitting the rev limiter about 10feet from the line. that was on 22in tall slicks. and after i turned up the boost to 19psi and spinning the tires through 3rd gear and getting some grip in 4th gear. I was shiffting to 5th about 20feet from the line. running 112-114mph. So i think that if i would have had taller slicks i would have been in the 11s easy.

what size tires are you running?

Anyone ever look into any other trannys? or how about custom gearing? is there any cost effective way to change out some of the gears? Trannys are my newest area of learning. I don't know a whole lot about gear ratios and such, I've been learning from my friend, and I've yet to go do some heavy reading on the topis, maybe I'll take an actuall auto class soon instead of just sitting around trying to learn it all on my own. Just curious as to whether or not other gears/trannys might mount up without needing an adapter.

I'm thinking the only way to get tighter gearing is to go completely custom. Any tranny that might be compatible probably wouldn't be worth dropping in because it'd have longer gears.

I'd like to see someone spend some money on a completely custom 1st-5th gear along with a high final drive, say 4.4-4.785. Upping the final drive that much has got to be worth a half second in the quarter at the least, especially with a GTX swap.

for tires I'm running 205/50/15's...

I know people sometimes swap a 626 5th gear to get better highway mileage... but never heard anything about other gears.

91-92 trannys are geared nicely... but apparently they're weaker? I wonder how much weaker.

rob was talking a few months back about wanting to try and supe up the GT trannies like he did the ZX2.. that would be a nice tranny to have.
i beg to differ. who wants a "racing" tranny that makes max speed up to 100. i know if i was drag racing that would make me hit 13's and stay there. cause the final drive is huge i hear.

I originally had a tranny from a 91 in my wagon.. that was before I had my GPS, so I'm not quite sure what my top speed was, but something went wonky inside of it, after half of a season of autocrossing and high-speed track lapping days. Something in it was knocking back against the linkage when i was shifting towards 5th/reverse, it was physically smacking the gear lever around pretty badly, it kinda hurt my wrist. I took my car home nicely in 4th gear, and parked it until i swapped trannies..

Right now i've got a Protege tranny in it, I don't know if its the G5M or G25M, but I'm pretty sure it's the G5. But I only got to the 1/4 line at 96.7mph, and I was nearing the top of the rev range. I'm sure with more practice I'd be doing better. Whis tranny I've been able to get up to 133mph in 5th gear, at or slightly above 6000rpm (ran out of room)

Personally, I would love to swap in a Getrag 6-speed somehow, because I do more autocross and road racing than drag racing, and that would really help to get the torque to the ground better in different conditions.

Anyone have this page out of a manual from a newer escort GT with the G25M-R transmission so we can compare?

!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmm.. I just was searching for "g25m-r ratio" on google, and ran across this post at the Club Protege forums... http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5065

the gist of it is this:
I'm surprised I didn't notice this sooner.... I was looking through my Japanese parts catalogs again and found out that there are factory LSDs for the 2nd gen... not sure if it's viscous or torsen... but regardless, it still means there's more parts

For the G25M-R:
4.105 ring gear ratio: G565-27-190A
Now, he's talking about the 2nd gen proteges, not escorts, but if the tranny part number is the same (G25M-R) wouldn't that mean there's a factory LSD option for the 2nd Gen EGT trannies as well? Somebody else want to corroborate this information, just to make sure I'm not on crack?

i drove adams GT today.. and i must say, its impressive.. but the gears run out short.

just as i was having fun pulling almost 10psi in 2nd gear up the airport road.. BAM! had to shift cuz i was redlining it.. at 55mph!

now.. my 91 trans can take 2nd up to 70, give or take 3mph.

seems to me that would make for a more enjoyable driving experience.

Well can you just set the rev limiter back some rpms so the gears are longer. Neuman said I though that the EGTs could pull 8000 rpms we someone could just move the revlimiter back to 8000 instead of 7500 if this is correct. But correct me if I am wrong.

yea I'm positive you have a G5M

you ended the 1/4 in third right? plus, you're driving a wagon man... ~97mph is flying.

It seems most of the GTX swapped escorts are running the G5M... at least the ones that have been to the track. It sucks, but I'm willing to bet that a G25M BP-T escort will trap significantly slower than a G5M with the same setup. A G25M would probably be better from a dig or a slow roll... but for highway runs and such G5M > G25M

I mean shit, 4th winds out at a little over 100mph with my G25....

oh well :(

I hope to close in on 100mph when I track her in the spring.

Nope, I had to go to 4th, I hit the rev limiter in 3rd (and in 1st and 2nd too, probably added some hundredths/tenths to my time....

and in my 92EGT, before I broke it, 4th topped around 110-115 for me if I recall (it's been a LONG time since I drove it, I think it was memorial day weekend, last spring-ish...)
