Hi all, I thought I´d cruise this board since there´s a link to you from www.tempotopaz.com and we seem to be automotive cousins... I´ve been told that an Escort torque converter will fit our T/T´s, and give a higher stall speed.

I don´t currently have an Escort, but used to own an ´81, and I completely rebuilt the 1.6L engine in it and am very familiar with it. (.030 overbore, the whole bit).

Are the 1.6L and 1.9L engines basically the same? Or different engine families? Is there a "Specifications" section I just haven´t found yet?

I really like your site.

Welcome to FEOA Dan! Its ok that you don´t own a scort as long as you still respect them and hey at least you used to own one. As for your question, I´m not positive, but I think the 1.9L is basically a lengthened version of the 1.6L. Afterall the some of the parts from the 1.6L, like the exaust manifold, and the turbo, will fit the 1.9L with no mods. As for the 1.8L, well thats completly different in that it has DOHC and is a Mazda based engine unlike the Ford based 1.9L and 1.6L. I know you didn´t ask about the 1.8L, but I thought I´d pass on that tidbit of information anyway. As for the question on the tranny, I have no idea because I have only driven standards. Sorry. But welcome anyway, and I´m positive someone will have the answer to your question.

Welcome Dan!
I checked out your T/T site, and it really rocks! Especially like the model year info and the picture gallery. A lot there that we can aspire to here at FEOA!
:p
Sorry, I have no idea whether the trans from an Escort would fit.

87 Topaz L 4dr stick in scarlet on gray. No Options! After a few trips to the wrecker I practically made it into something between a GS and an LS using all factory parts.

On my old ´scort, when I rebuilt her engine, I had a hard time finding a block that would clean up with an .030 overbore. The #1 cylinder wore like crazy, because it ran colder than the others, I was told.

Is this typical of the older Escort 1.6L? My main reason for cruising this site is to educate myself; I´ve long dreamed of starting my own small "Hobby Shop", working exclusively on FWD Fords, selling/making parts, horse trading a few cars here and there, and the like.

Too bad about WA state´s tax structure and regulatory enviroment! That´s the only thing that stops me. Curbstoned a couple cars, that was fun.

Do the Mazda-built ´scorts use the MECS (Mazda Engine Control System) or the EEC-IV and V?

Respect these cars? Bleep, I love ´em! They´re light, incredibly tough, good gas mileage, and can be modified - the aftermarket supports them well, not something I can say about the Taurus, Sable, Tempo or Topaz.

Is a header available? If not, I´ve worked with www.headersbyed.com to get a design for the T/T´s. His InfoPak is a real eye-opener.... :-]
