So I was searching online a couple nights ago and I came across what may or may not be a good deal. I found someone who is selling a 93 Mazda MX-3 with a bad fuel pump. As far as any other details, I have no idea. I was actually going to go look at it and possibly take some pics. The place its at is an auto shop, so they probably want to get rid of it. They are asking $650, but I was thinking of offering lower depending on the condition. So is a deal or no deal?

If its -only- problem was the fuel pump, it would be a terrific bargain. But if the pump were the only problem, they would probably be fixing it themselves.

My usual guideline is whether I like the car - visually and to drive -, and how much rust the body has. I can enjoy fixing drivelines, but doing rust-cures is drudgery to me.

I talked to the guy on the phone. It is a towing company known locally here in Phx as KBAR Towing. They specialize in Junk Car Removal. They said that the guy he got it from went to a party and lost the keys, and the car was parked in his driveway for about 2 years. He had a motorcycle and decided to get rid of it. The towing company got new keys made for it and tried to start it but it wasn't getting fuel. They got it to start by putting gas in the intake and it ran perfect, no issues. He said it is a 5 spd, but they don't know the engine type, whether its a 4cyl or 6cyl. The car has about 100K on the clock, no body damage, no rust, faded paint and it is a little dirty, but its to be expected in AZ, but he says for someone who is willing to do it, it is a steal. They have lots of cars for sale that they remove from people, some run, some don't. My GF took my car and is in a movie right now, so she has the keys to her car and my car so I have to wait till Monday to take a look at it.

Maybe I'm off my rocker here, but if they're mechanically inclined enough to get it started, shouldn't this be a logical 'easy' to figure out?

A lot of times you will find out there are more serious problems when you buy a car that doesnt run and they tell you its just "a fuel pump". If it was really something so simple they would probably fix it seeing as they could make a lot more money after it runs. But it could also be exactly as they say. If you can afford it go for it, no risk no reward.

as a towing company, they just want to move the car. they will try the basic stuff (spraying ether in the intake) but won't bother with actually pulling the pump to replace it. they don't want to dump any money into the car.

For $650, why not? Maybe even offer $600 and see if they bite.

See that is what I was thinking. They said they had it running long enough on the ether to get it to move in first and then make sure it went in reverse, but not long enough for a test drive.

BUt they had the hood open to pour gas in the intake to make it run? (how did they do that?) btu dont know if its a v6, or straight 4. they look totally diffrent. unless someone else was doing the work.

ask if they can fix it up for like 700-750, if not and theyre selling it as-is then offer 500 flat to take it away. ud be doing them a favor, they clearly dont care about the car.

Well, I talked to the misses and she disapproves. We really need a new car to replace her Kia, but she wants us to buy a car that runs and doesn't potentially have hidden problems. So, if anyone else is interested in it, let me know, I will give ya the guys number.
