Sounds like a few good points . I will look into those options. All I know is it’s a decent car, paint is good and interior but the value since it’s so old is no more than 1500.00

$1,000 in taxes for a $1,500 car that wasn't even being used? Sounds like a strategy invoked by the locality that might be designed to help keep people from amassing a bunch of junkers on their property. In other localities and states, they typically only bug you about keeping them out of sight, off the public road, insured and/or not leaking a toxic mess. If you don't tag it for a year, there's nothing back-owed. But if it's on the street you're subject to be ticketed and towed. (and that could be more than the tag... and it still has to be tagged after paying the ticket unless it's moved off of public property)

In California if you let registration go behind they charge you the fee plus back fees so basically penalties. The car is 3 1/5 years out so it’s $915 to register.
If I drop it off at the wrecking yard they will give me $185 for the car. But it’s just to nice to let go for that. I might buy another one for two or three hundred that has current registration that maybe has blown engine or bad trans and just swap everything. Then at that point get rid of the shell. We will see, I’m not gonna make a decision yet till after Xmas.

What happens if you register a vehicle purchased from out of state?

I think you'd have to have an out-of-state address to register it under? P.O. Box??

You can buy any vehicle from out of state and bring it here. When you register it you have to pay California tax, even though you bought it somewhere else. Also California doesn’t accept any other states smog certificate. So the vehicle better not be modified or your gonna run into issues that will cost you.

I found another focus of the same year with a bad transmission. The vehicle is in as good condition as the one I have paint and interior. This one has currently registration, but a bad transmission. So the guy is willing to let it go for $200 . So I think I’ll swap the trans . Sell that one to my friend that wants it and junk the one with the crap registration bill.

Was also gonna keep the engine so I can use it for another possible escort . I know the block is the same as the focus sohc. Just need to change out the cylinder head. Hopefully I can find a 2000 so I don’t have to drill and tap the block for the older pcv system.

The car seemed like more of a head ache than it was worth I ended up just giving it to a homeless guy. Explained the issue and wished him a merry Xmas . He will probably never register it and at least he will have a back seat to lye his head for a while . Unless cops mess with him and impound it if he’s driving it around.
it’s out of my hair and I can concentrate on fixing cars instead of investing my money hoping to sell it.
