Supposedly a friend from work I’ve done work on his vehicles wants to give me a Ford Focus . Not sure of the year that the car is. Supposedly they didn’t non op it and it’s back due a couple years (most likely $500 ) to get things current. On top of , the engine went out and the son supposedly rebuilt it but it didn’t work out. So he knows I can fix it correctly so they are gonna give me the car. I’m not sure if it’s the focus that has the split port or if it’s got the zx2 motor. Once I get it in a few weeks I’ll post pics.

I'm curious where you live that you have to pay for previous time that the car wasn't on the road.

For all the annoying features of vehicle law where I live, we don't have anything like that.

Almost guaranteed to be a split port. You can swap in a zetec with not too much more effort.

I’m in good ole California. They juice you for every damn dime you got.

I’m working on a corolla right now that the guy has . Needs a few things like door lock mechanism, inside door handle broken , struts all around. He dropped it off this evening and I brought up the focus . He said it’s a sohc so I remember the early ones did share the split port motor. So for me it will be a easy fix. I do already know the focus head is different due to the bolt pattern for intake and exhaust. So I’m supposed to pick the car up next week once I’m done with the corolla. I’m going out to Laughlin for my birthday weekend and the wife and I are gonna do a little gambling and good food. So I’ll start on the corolla when I get back on Sunday for Monday morning.

I recently did the same job on a car, but changing the strut only. When it was all back together I realized I forgot to replace the bellows thing.

Mine was a charity job so I left it at that.

Only thing we have to do here in KY is pay the property tax due each year if the car isn't licensed for the year or turn in the title. If you turn in the title it becomes a salvaged car and can never be re titled and put back on the road. Every car I've ever let go unlicensed has been an older model and the taxes usually only run $2-3 for the year. It was the same way in NC when I lived there. Keep the taxes up to date and re license it when you get ready.

I picked the car up today . I checked the compression and it had 150 psi all cylinders. So I knew it would most likely run as long as I had fuel and spark. Put a fresh battery in and it started right up. As the idle cane down it died . So I had my neighbor start it while I held the throttle a bit to keep it going. I heard a vacuum leak at the evap canister on the fire wall. The fitting was snapped of and getting a ton of unmetered air. So a trip to the wrecking yard will fix it . I glued the snapped piece to verify it ran ok and it did. Took it around the block a few times and everything else feels pretty good. The license tags are 3 and a half years out of date. So I have to go to dmv and see what it will cost. Even if it’s 5-800 that wouldn’t be bad considering I paid 0 for the car.

Been super busy working my normal job and tons of side car work. Finally got around to finding out the back fees, It’s $915 . Is there anyway I could get some of the penalties reduced? Or any other options? Thanks

Maybe register it out of state?
Then when it comes up for renewal, bring it back?
How about phoning up the relevant authority and explaining that it's an "old" car with minimal value and asking if there's a more reasonable way. Perhaps you (or an independent repair shop) could "scrap" it and then re-register it as a salvaged vehicle?
