Man, am I glad I found this forum. I have my mom's '89 Ford Escort Hatchback LX, runs like a top with only 70kmiles. Problem is, I had a huge limb go right through the hatchback glass and I can't find a replacement. Any ideas where to find one, or the whole hatchback. I checked our local salvage yards with no help.

your comprehensive insurance should cover that at a glass shop.

that will be a hard to find. Most scrap yard have long since stopped stocking the cars and just crush them. But there is a you pull out side Pittsburgh that sometimes has old escorts. Insurance if you have comprehensive may be abler yo help too.

Money isn't the issue, it is finding the glass. I have found a few places but they don't ship, would have to drive to Ohio. Thanks

Thanks Austin.....I had seen that one but it is about a 10 hour drive for me. Sucks since I loved this car, mom gave it to me 20 years old with only 20k miles on it. I hope one will turn up somewhere.....new to the group and thought maybe someone had a good supplier of parts. Thanks again !!

what i meant was that a reputable glass shop should be able to find a glass... there are a/m resources for them.

Sure....Safelite came out and they thought they had the right one.... but when the guy showed up..... not even close. His wasn't for a hatchback and maybe even the wrong year. They called me back later and said they were unable to find one for me... and that was that.... LOL

If your local glas shops can't help try putting a few want adds out there. Also try looking on eBay for cars being parted out. You may be able to find someone parting one out that has not listed the glass.
Sadly the only spare glas I have is ether for the exp or wegon.

In most places you can replace back glass with polycarbonate. You can make a polycarbonate back glass rather cheaply. But it still scratch rather easly.
Not a best option for most people. But thought I'd toss it out there. Just make sure it's legal were you are at.

Appreciate that..... I could care less what it looks like or anything like that.... just hate to see her sitting. The polycarbonate, is that like the clear stuff you see at Home Depot.... similar to a hard see thru plastic?? I had thought about using that just so it doesn't have a tarp on it and see what happens. Thanks !!

Yes it is a see thought sheet. Polycarbonate is sometimes sold at hardware stores, it might be called lexan. Don't use acrylic or plexiglass, it will crack, brake and scratch supper fast.
If you go that rout be sure its legal were you are. Most places in the US don't care so long as its not the front side glass or windshield. Some places don't alow it on the sides at all. I don't know of anywhere that does not alow it on a hatch or rear end of a car. But that does not mean there is not a state or county that does not alow it.

Also polycarbonate is much lighter then glass. It probably will not make much a difference for a daily driver type car, but rear end ride height may change and for sure the hatch struts will hold the hatch up far better with less weight on them. It will scratch without a anti scratch coating on it and even then it will scratch at some point, it also can discolor over time. So not the best option, but it beats duct tape and trash bags or jest leaving the hole empty.

Where are you located? I have a good hatch on a pony here. It would be a non heated glass
