Hi looking to buy a reliable winter car have choice between a 92 Toyota Corolla for 325.00 that needs minor work inspection, front tires rotors, shoes,a rust hole patched and exhaust rattles really bad work on it will total around 160.00 without running into other unknown problems. It has 140,700 miles on it or my other choice is a 1995 Escort LX for 700.00 OBO but it needs nothing tires are good has new exhaust,no rust, new brakes,it has 135,000 miles on it a little beat up but I don't care my current car is a 96 it only has 89,000 on it we did timing belt, water pump and head gasket in 8 years so I know mine is very reliable I am no where near this mileage with any Escort I have ever owned to know how they run with this mileage and how long they go after this I don't want a car that will die on me in 6 months the only + if the scort would it would be parts (poor car) but most Toyota's run forever. Also Escorts have a good crash test rating 4 out of 5 where the Corolla is a 2 please help any info on Escorts at this mileage would be helpful and any opinion on which one to choose will be helpful. Thanks Mary

That Corolla will outlive you.

It'll also bore you to death. But so will the Escort.

You're just looking for a winter beater? Buy the cheaper one.

Thanks for the reply I kinda thought the Corolla would go awhile I don't really want to use a Escort for winter it's kinda mean to do that to a fellow Escort but I would I don't care about bored I have a 96 Escort now I love it I'm not bored I have spiced it up enough to not be boring.I have no intent on fixing either winter car up just want have a car so I don't have to subject my car to another PA winter!!The only good out of the Escort would be parts if it died but it is alot more money unless they would take less on an offer I just need to know which one I will get the most use out of I don't want to buy another car anytime soon!!! Thanks Mary

I'd have to honestly say the Corolla. Despite being fun in general, i've found the build quality on our Escort to be rather lacking.

If you remember to put gas, oil, and coolant in the Corolla, it won't leave you stranded. Screw tune-ups, just drive it. In the event that it DOES start to go south, it'll run badly for longer than most cars RUN, period.

I think it's got the 4afe engine in it. It's a gutless 1.6liter, but not near as much as the Escort, it's great on gas, and ridiculously simple to work on. The interior won't fall apart and crumble to pieces around you, and it won't rattle like crazy, either. It'll have more than adequate brakes, rather than just barely adequate like the Escort.

And it's cheaper to start with? Win win win situation.

Obviously, go drive it first and see what you think.

I can't see the car, it might be the biggest pile ever known to man.

No not a pile!!Body is clean of rust 1 hole and it is a hole in the rear passenger door the size of a tangerine easy fix putty and cheap paint It doesn't have to look good rear bumper is faded that is it!!Engine is as clean as mine not clean but not absolutely filthy either.Starts right up and my hubby drove it it has more take off and power than mine it is the 1.6 4 cylinder 14,700 miles owned by this owners brother from day 1 now him.no knocks noise anything except exhaust rattles something terrible like I said need a few minor things rotors are warped and it need 2 tires and inspection.

^If that's all that's wrong with it, the 'rolla gets my vote.

And yeah, it's going to have more pickup than the Escort. It's got 117hp or something, and it'll actually rev a bit. ;)

car

Also just found a 98 Escort with 141,000 miles it runs great no issues at all just needs brakes all the way around. He wants 700.00 but said what ever it will cost to fix he will deduct that.So it may not be a bad deal.

that 98 sounds like a good deal, itll be a tad quicker than your 96.

i cant say much as im biased towards escorts, and every corolla ive known, from friends or family have been POS's
