I was looking through some of the how to's and saw how someone changed the green stock color to white or whatever color you want by painting over the letters and numbers on the backside. I've been wanting to change the letter colors since I hated the ugly 90's green. I have a spare gauge cluster with tach and decided to use those gauge faces so that I didn't have to remove the gauge cluster in the car.

I used a small flathead screwdriver to scrape off the heavy part of the coating being careful not to scratch the backside or blow through the gauge face and finished up with some 600 grit.

I need to change out the Fleabay T10 LED's that I had installed previous anyways so this will give me a chance to change out the gauge faces.

I'll attempt to change the radio plate lettering color to white later to match the gauge cluster.

    '98 SE Wagon.

Since I live in tinsel town there are a lot of film supply houses that service the entertainment industry. I swung by one and grabbed a color gel/diffuser sample pack. The color gels are the plastic colored films used to light film and stage.

Rather than paint over the numbers I decided to color the text with film gels for consistent, even coverage. Some of the ones I've seen painted look a little uneven depending on how thick they layed the paint on in any one area. It will also afford me color change outs when I get bored of that color.

cool, just a suggestion for a future mod maybe, that looks cool and modern( especially at night). https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.X98 ford escort dash glow.TRS0&_nkw=98 ford escort dash glow&_sacat=0

thats a general list of those but this is the one i got for my 01 ford zx2
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/98-03-Esco...GLOW-GAUGES-/252442367661?hash=item3ac6bcd6ad

easy to install, just place on top of your gauges and connect a 12v supply ( from the switched ignition or the stereo). my kit came with the glow level dimmer switch so i can adjust it to super bright or super dim.

I had a set of those on my '03 Mustang. The white face looked cool during the day but you couldn't see the white face at night and I didn't really care for the blue text.

I'm still debating whether it's worth it. I already changed the green text to white. I'd like to change the base color to red with the text being white. I think it'll look really clean with the black bezel contrasting the red gauge face. I spoke to whitegauges.com but they want $50 for a set. Maybe I'll hit up my local vinyl banner printer and see what he would charge me to make a vinyl overlay. If not I'll leave them black with white text.

What about plastic transparencies? Those are cheap.

Way ahead of ya Brother!! LOL!

That was my original idea as far as lighting specific areas in the color I wanted. My plan is to run all cool white lighting LED's to match the Pioneer deck and the '03 radio plate. The Pioneer deck can be programmed for multiple colors but I thought white looked the cleanest. I'm changing the '03 radio plate bulbs with cool white LED's also.

I live in L.A. so I have a variety of film industry supply stores in my area. I bought a sample pack of color gels so I have a large range to choose from. Since I'm going to keep the text cool white I don't need much. Sample pack cost me around $3.00

I kept the green background but went with an all LED dash. Not to self: the next time you take the speedo apart REMOVE the needlestop!;)

Nice and bright! Which bulbs did you use? I'm thinking of placing the gels strategically. For example, I want the needles to be red so if I use red gel under the needle the needles will be red but since the gels also diffuse light I'd like to go with a higher lumen bulb in the cluster to make up for the lumen loss with the gels.

    Nice 100k pic.
Something to think about John, use some gels around the odometer box to cut glare from the outside edges of it

It was originally tinted with green but I sanded that off so now it's clear. I'll probably glue a strip of dark blue to get the right filter so it's nice and clear. Good thing I have around 20 shades of blue to choose from.
