I've lived w/o a tachometer for way too long now and a visit to the junk yard gave me opportunity to finally get a gauge cluster with a tachometer. My car is a 95 LX manual. It's got that stupid little shifter light that I swear at almost everytime it goes on. The speedometer is in the center, fuel on the left, and temperature on the right. The donor car was a 96 LX automatic. The cluster from the donor car has (from left to right) temp, fuel, speedometer, tachometer. Both clusters have three connections in the rear and my car plugs went right into the donor cluster just fine. Call me an idiot if you want to for thinking that I'd be able to just plug this thing in and have it work. I was reading other posts and read something about needing another electronic piece for the tach. Anyway, the cluster is in my car now but does not light up, warning lights except for the battery light do not go on. (no airbag, oil etc) Could anyone give me more information about this other part that I might need, and/or information about rewiring the thing to make it work. Thanks guys/girls!

guage cluster

well this is my first time so hopefully it works. I am about to do the same on my 1994 wagon and would really like to know how to do this.
I read some where about a green white wire that needs to be hooked up.
maybe some one can show the way.

ERDT is dead, like Elvis. Don't worry about that.

For the original post, if you just popped the entire new cluster in, the bulbs may be old and dead because the cluster is old. It's a shame you went this far, because you should have tested the the new cluster (via engine start) before putting everything back together. Pull the cluster back out and replace all the bulbs that don't appear to work (they're 194's). Then, without fully re-installing the cluster, re-start the engine. The lights should all illuminate momentarily (start-up tests all the circuits to let you know when the bulbs are fried).

Then, go have a beer, 'cos you're the man.

Hate to say it but none of these things were very helpful. I know it's not a lighting issue because some of the light. What I really need now is a wiring diagram that will allow me to start swapping wires. Does anyone know where i can find one online?
Also, I figured out that i'm going to have to run a wire from the EDIS-4 plug under the hood since I'm missing the second one from the left when viewed from the front of the car. Again, any further suggestions would be appreciated.

Just to prove it right or wrong... I have a 3 gauge in my car, I took it out and installed a 4 gauge cluster ( I also made sure that ALL of the bulbs worked first) and nothing worked. Not the fuel, tach, or temp gauge worked, and nothing lit up for me. Alomst all of the wires have to be rearraged, I have a printed copy of what marclar was talking about. If I get some time I'll write it up and then everyone can ba HAPPY!

Elvis isn't dead.

Much appreciated although I think i'm going to march my ass right back to the junkyard and pick up all the wiring this time. none of this cluster only crap. big mistake on my part, but i've learned. This is really a good project for those people out there that have lived without a tach. I will share my work with others once I finish.. Thanks!

its more work to swap ALL of the wiring for the dash. and im not goig to promise that the car will even work since the wiring you want to put in is from an OBDII equipped 96 escort.

your best bet is to just get the wiring diagrams and plan out what wires will be moved to where and then do it. the connectors come out rather easily and just push back into their new home.

Hey, see if you can find a '91 Auto LX. B/c mine has a tach, and it's an auto. I've seen those manuals w/o a tach, and I think that is one of the biggest automotive mistakes. Right next to the Element.

Most of the wires need to be swapped around, and you need to add a couple for the tach.

you might be able to find a post or howto about it on some of the other escort sites, if they have it. Such a shame that the ERDT server was toasted without backup, because there was a crapload of info all in one easily searchable place.... :(
