My car gets anywhere from 17-21 mpg now that the restrictor and silencer are off the car, this is with mostly in city driving. The best it's done ever is 27 mpg and that was a 300 mile round trip to and from Columbus Ohio. Did really good on oil that trip too. I had a few quarts in my car just in case.

Mainly city driving, between 35 and 55 miles per hour, I get 26.2 mpg. That's with a conical intake, 4-2-1 header and Pacesetter exhaust with inline resonator, 195/55 15" tires, and 83000 miles.

With a stretched timing belt, sticky 205 width rubber, and an oxygen sensor.. I'm near 20mpg in my LX. She pulls strong though  She'll pull better once I get the cam timing back up to spec.

I drive an Escort Lx 94 Wagon and i usually do about 300km at about 3/4 of my tank...so it's 100 km/ quarter.... so i guess i could make around 400 km for an entire tank...and this is while driving around in the city (80%) and on the highway ( at 65 mph = 2500 rpm) and id' say 10% of traffic jams....

I've taking out my silencer recently and i have a little better gas mileage, but i was driving on my winter tires on summer conditions ehhe.. I've put my summer tires 2 days ago so next time i'll full my tank, i'll start to check for good....

I think i'll replace my o2 sensor since it has never been replaced and i'll change my fuel filter too..... Also, in the winter i get more white smoke then the usual cars...i guess it's because my car is older then the others, but what could be the caus of this?....my engine is probably dirty...but why is it dirty? When you say " are you burning oil"...where should the leak most of the time come from? The spark plugs areas or somewhere else? I'll change my sparkplugs soon so i'll check it all out at this time....

Tanx for your knowledge people...

17-19 mpg :(. im going to replace O2 sensor when it warms up.
Also check your Coolant Temperature sensor. Mine had dirty electrical contacts and it affected my gas mileage in a major way.

Usually it's badly worn rings or cracked valve seals. The tops of the valves are bathed in oil, and there are soft seals to keep oil from dropping down along the stem (through the valve guide) and getting sucked into the vaccum of the intake. Over time they harden up and crack, or just wear through from friction against the valve stem.

Worn valves also mean a loss of compression, and therefore reduced efficiency and performance.

You said you had white smoke.. that's water vapor. Blue smoke is oil. Part of the concern over burning oil is that the oily exhaust doesn't do a new oxygen sensor any good (or a catalytic converter, for that matter). If you have excessive white (water vapor) smoke.. take a whiff of it (not straight from the pipe). Does it smell sweet? If so then you're burning coolant and you've got a cracked headgasket... if not.. don't worry too much. :D
