Back in late November, I purchased a '91 GT for $1.5k (when I got off of Parris Island, I recieved a Med. Sep.). This was in Virginia Beach. No more than 5 days after the new year my baby developed a REALLY nasty knock that went all the way to the clutch and shifter. I was terrified that I was gonna have to get rid of my new baby. (Before her I drove a '94 LX wagon, and fell in love with escorts) I got her to my mechanic and a few days later he said it was most likely a dropped valve. That came with a $1500-2000 repair ticket. Well, my fears were justified, 'cause I had to depart. Now I'm in Brighton, MI driving a '93 Thunderbird with the 5.0 in it. Anyways, has anyone had this happen to them. I'd really like to find another GT here, but am hesitant because the salt-filled winters and the damage they do. I might consider a 2001-2003 ZX2 as well, maybe both so I can do extensive projects on both. Looking for TURBO.

It is common to happen to the 1.9 when over heated, but I'v never heard it happen to a 1.8 GT.

I'm thinking the machanic just assumed it was a 1.9 and that was his first guess. Sounds more like a rod bearing or somthing to me, I dont think a dropped valve seat makes that kind of noise.

I've never heard of that happening to the BP engine.

I have only one question to ask you... why ford?
happened to my engine. Valve went straight through the piston. Dropped a valve/swallowed a valve, all the same thing.. Some of the easy signs of telling are to look at ur spark plugs. Mine was completely crushed when i pulled it out cuz there was metal in the way of the piston. But i took my head apart and there was a hole in my piston. I think my problem was way back when i slipped timing i took it to a shop to have it timed and when i got it back i had detonation. I was told that it would go away and it never did. I drove it like that for a year before i swallowed a valve. I also had the same price tag. I had either 1800 or 2200 for a quote. The price difference was the mileage difference between the 2 engines they were going to swap in. 1800 for the engine w/ 80k on it and 2200 on the engine w/ 50k on it.

yea, thanks. I probably should've been a little more specific about that "knock." That stupid knock shook the entire car, so I know that it was most likely a large problem. And when I pushed the clutch to the floor, it stopped shaking. And I was gonna ship over a GTX as well. Dammit, why did I move?
