    Good morning Guys,

I own two 99 escorts. I am having an issue with one of them at the moment,

I am having a sputtering, stuttering or little surging at a constant speed that goes away every now and then. It is normally accompanied with a Check Engine light for running LEAN. Sometimes it has a code sometimes it doesn't. With that being said I have a new fuel filter and a new fuel pump. no change in symptoms at all. Sometimes My car will be fine for 1000s miles sometimes it will stay like that for 1000s of miles. I have ran through the internet up and down trying to find this problem. And my last hope rests here. Some more symptoms are having to cycle the fuel system two or three. before turning over the engine or I will face a "long crank".

Another Issue is my turn signal went out. I swapped over some LED bulbs and now the drivers side has a hyper flash, So i take to the internet to find a LED relay for the turn signal with no avail. The closest I have came to is D1FZ 13350-A. which I do not know if that will work.

If anyone of you could help me out with any of this I will be very thankful. I have looked everywhere and replaced most of what I think is the problem.

I have had the same fuel problems before all of the following replacements:

    Escort: 155k miles
    New Sparkplugs
    New Sparkplug wires
    New Coilpack
    New PCV valve
    Almost all vacuum lines replaced
    New fuel filter
    New Fuel pump

You are experiencing early signs of valve seat failure. Search the threads on this forum for signs and remedies. Secondly, you cannot put an led flasher in a third gen escort, the flasher is proprietary. Led bulbs are not street legal, I advise reinstalling the stock bulbs.

Alright, I replaced them because of a burnt out bulb. And valve seat failure is not was I was hoping to hear... I love this car to death but reinstalling a new head, paired with my hopes and prayers for no bottom end damage. I know as the car sits it’s only worth -1000-1500 at best.

The good news is that fixing it before it breaks is only ¼ the cost of after. Take the head to a machine shop and have it back together in just a few days

My 97 was having issues like that, with erratic idle & surging. I chased it down as an electrical problem, caused by something as simple as some mild corrosion on the ground connections. I cleaned them all up and it went away.

It's definitely worth a shot before swapping out the head.
