The problem is either with the sending unit of the fuel pump or the gauge in the cluster itself. When you begin to empty your gas tank, there is a linkage up to a variable resistor in the sending unit. If your sending unit is fuxxord or the gauge is screwed up, you'll get a screwey reading.
