How easy is it to replace the front bumper of an Escort?

I've got a '93 Escort LX Wagon and the front bumper
got damaged during an 'unapproved joyride' by my
16 year old son.

Also, can anyone recommend a good place (website?) to obtain
a replacement bumper (beyond going to a local junkyard or Ebay)?

Thanks,

I know you said you wanted to avoid the junkyard, but...

The LX bumpers are not colour matched (they're all blackish), so your chances of finding an acceptable one at a junkyward are good.

There are two or three good ones at my junker, including one from a wagon.

It's a piece of cake to change them. No more than one hour to pull one off and put the replacement on, even if you work slowly.

Lol i have become a pro at removing front bumpers off of escorts lol...i took mine off like at least 30 time in the last few months....ahh the joy of designing body kits :p

All you have to do is

1- remove the side markers ( amber relflectors) besides the headlights . In order to remove them...unscrew the side screw and then open the hood and unscrew the screw located on top of your headlight...Then pop them off from the side...pull hard there is a safety pin that runs inside the headlights...then unplug the bulbs... Do it for each side...

2- you have to remove the grill with the ford logo. Be carefull with the plastif fasteners caus they are fragile...Use a flat head screwdriver to push on the little tip of the fastener...as you do it they will pop off...kinda hard to explain but you'll see...and for the middle fastener...you'l have to use a plier to push simultaneously on both side of the fastener..

3- Then you have to remove the headlights...you have 5 bolts for each to unbolt....( for each headlight) 1 on the radiator's top crossmember... and 2 on each side of the head light. Take them off and unplug the bulb.

4- now, if yuou look at the bumper, there is 3 bolts on each side to unbolt. then you'll have to go on each side of the bumper...near the fender and push on the bumper's edge with your foot...caus each end of the bumper is mounted in some kind of a bolt...but all you have to do is push hard on the end of the bumper and it will come off... ask someone to hold the bumper in order to prevent any warping...i have done it a lots of time alone without having any problems but you never know...better be too carefull than not enough..

you should be set with this...its kinda hard to explain but you'll see its easy...just check out for screws and bolts...

Ponys aren't color matched to my knowledge, but I've never seen an LX with a balck/grey bumper that wasn't a replacement from somewhere.

Just my opinion, but if you can get a GT bumper they look a bit better, although I am not sure if you are all that concerned with that, but eh, since it has to be replaced...

Sorry that must be incorrect then...

They musta changed to colour matching during a certain model year. I know the 1991 are all black and for some reason, the bumper on every LX at my junkyard is black (I was just there again today). Maybe all the LXs (5) at my junkyard are 91s???

everything electronikal said, except for...

install 4ft long 2X4. bolt-on or ropes will be acceptable.

go to the j/y. it's cheaper and like highanddry said, still you're not going to find one that's color-matched brand new.
a paintjob for the bumper is in your future, unless you're unbelievably lucky and find one that's the same color as your scort.

btw, will the bill of this little "unapproved joyride" come out of your or your son's pocket?
depending on that answer, money shouldn't be too much of an issue.

1991 are all non painted dull black. 1992-1996 are all painted. I have changed out my bumpers lots of times. If you go to a big U-pull-it place often enough you can often find rear bumpers the right color. I've done it twice. Front bumpers are much harder to find, but I've seen them too. Crazy Ray's in Jessup MD charges $43 for a bumper!

The removing and installing the bumper is real easy, even a retard could do it.

Personally I'd just get one in really good condition and paint it with my paint gun.

Most of it will be from my son's pocket, you bet!

He's already on the hook to pay for the increase in our
auto insurance premium by adding him to the policy.
He'll also be paying what's necessary to replace what's been
damaged; right now that appears to be just the bumper.

He's also prohibited from driving any of our cars for six months;
He only has a graduated driver's permit, which in NJ means
that:

- he's only supposed to drive while a supervising adult is in
the passenger seat (he drove alone...)
- he's only supposed to drive between 5AM and 11PM unless
he has a waiver, which he does not have (he drove sometime
after midnight...)
- he's only supposed to drive the vehicle that the permit is
currently in (the permit was in our family van, not the Escort...)

The boy just turned 16, and NJ law says he's supposed to have at
least 6 months of supervised driving, and he can't go to the next
step of licensing until he's 17...so I don't think I'm being too harsh.

heh, if i did that, my dad would put all of my money towards my funeral costs.

i understand why you're going for junkyard parts... to avoid insurance, and law officials. that was a stand-up thing you did. in ohio, if you're caught driving with your temps (which you can get at 15 1/2) you lose any change of you getting a license until you're 18. depending on the crime (if there is one) can be till you're 21.

your kid is lucky. and i hope everything takes a turn for the best in the repair of your guy's trust.. and most importantly, the repair of the escort. :)
