OK replaced the TPS car runs great no issues with IDLE in P or in D . BUT !!!!!! When I turn on the AC the IDLE Gets bad in P & really bad in D at a stop. Any ideas of what to do now ??? Some one sugessted to slot the holes on the TPS and adjust it that way ( because it is not adjustable ) but won't that raise my good idle without the AC on. I may just put back the old one & put back the .010 piece of metal on the throttle stop plate under the non adjustable idle screw because that worked before the new TPS was put in. OR if any one knows of a demolition derbie in my area car should last a while it only has 63K on it .
Lookit Phil, I don't know why you're having a problem adjusting you TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)!!! I've got my Haynes Manual here in front of me, and it covers 1991-2000 Escorts and Tracers. On pages 4-15, and 4-16, it talks about removing and replacing the TPS on both the !.9 Litre engine, and the 2.0 Litre engine. According to this book, the TPS' on both engines ARE adjustable!!!!! Here's one of the things that it says about adjusting them---
"Turn the Throttle Position Sensor 1/4 turn clockwise from it's installed position, then slide it into position over the throttle shaft blade and rotate the Throttle Position Sensor counterclockwise only to align the scribe marks. NOW GET THIS---Rotating the Sensor clockwise may cause excessive idle speeds." So doesn't that PROVE that the TPS IS ADJUSTABLE????????????????
Well Mr. Dragscort, your picture seems to prove your point!!! So, what then is my idiotic Haynes Manual talking about??? Is it just plain wrong? Or am I interpreting it wrong?
Thanks!!
Haynes is wrong about adjustment- the 1.8L and the early 1.9L were adjustable - the later models were not.
Haynes is speaking more in the way of installation than anything else -
I have my TPS (mind you, Im running a T-Bird TPS on the 3.8TB - same basic setup tho, eyelets and all) marked with a hash mark on the sensor houseing aswell as the TB - for ECU reset, I set it at .95ohms, after idle is learned, I set it to 1.2ohms and I have a good strong idle ~925rpm
also, IIRC, you dont neccasarily have to drill the eyelets out - they are pressed in... we drilled after the eyelets were out to increase the adjustment more

The repair manual is correct on the install that is the way I installed it but it is non adjustable early models yes this one no unless I slot thoses holes. Now get this I have been driving around with the AC on & the Idle is getting better now when I stop while in drive the shaking is getting less and less. Could the computer have something to do with this possibly readjusting it self to the new TPS ???
Just replaced mine last nite and reset the ECU will I was at it. But, before I reset the ECU, I started it up and let it sit for a minute and didn't notice anything right away.... Not sure if there is a difference but mine is a 2001 as you said yours is a 98.
2 month ago i run the car for about 2 weeks with the TPS sensor damage (one cable was broke inside) and it just have a retard action when you push the gas pedal.
The replacement came new from Autozone. The only thing I can think of is that maybe 1 of the 2 screws isn't tight enough. The heads of the screws seemed pretty soft and got stripped a little. Trying not to damage it any further, I got it as tight as I could before it was totally stripped. Kind of a hard place to get to....
hey my car is kind of doing the same thing. its a 97 auto and sometimes at idle it will just start to chug from 400-1000ish RPMs. drove with my buddys Ethos hooked up to it and nothing was out of the ordinary except the number 2 O2 sensor by like 5 pts. any ideas?
Well after I changed the TPS she was running better P or D with no AC & bad with AC.After driving about 250 miles it's just the opposite runs better with AC on & low idel with AC off. Any one got any other ideas ??? Good DTFE good IACV good Plugs good PVC good Wires good Air Filter Intake Totaly clean MAF spotless ect. Are there any after market parts that will correct this problem & make it run better. Did a total scan all normal temp normal O2 normal exhaust normal I ran her at high speed 90 mph and she ran great plenty of power & passing power shifts great. 63K auto tranny. Someone anyone ????? POR IDLE !!!!!!!!!!
Did you make sure you didn't lose the o-ring when you cleaned the MAF? also, did you make sure the IAC Gasket was on the right way, if not it will half close one of the holes, (I had to cut my Felpro gasket for it to fit exact!). EGR been cleaned? the tubing leading from it? Replace the HEGO sensor? the EGR vacumn regulator? If you have a DRB tester, check those sensors to see if they are funtioning properly. This could be a EGR valve issue.
I will check all the above thanks for the tip. What is the HEGO sensor ??? I used a scan tool and talked to the cars computer all was good all sensors reported back good. Before I replaced the TPS I was getting Missfire cyl#2 & IAC overspeed code. I was told since the TPS does not report to the computer that the missfire cyl#2 was due to the old TPS not working properly. Any other ideas ??
