So I had a couple local shade-tree mechanics install another automatic transmission in my 91 1.9 wagon. In doing so I don't believe the shift cable was install correctly.

To start the vehicle you have to firmly press forward on the shifter and the gears do not seem to line up with the selector. I have tried adjusting the cable inside the car near the shifter, but am unable to find a point where the car will both start and the selector be in the correct position as the gear.

How do I make the shifter be the correct position and the car start without pressing forward on the shift knob.

Also, the speedometer does not work. Before it would bounce around 25mph and then be fine. I think this might be just a cable issue, so I am going to try this first.

Even though you are in the wrong section.
With the car off open the hood.
Disconnect cable from gear selector at the trans
Turn selector till it is all the way in 1st gear
Put shifter in car all the way into 1st
Now adjust the double nut adjustment on the trans till the cable lines up perfect with the trans selector and reconect that.

This was the easy way. I kept trying to adjust mine from the Park position and just couldn't get it lined up right.
