Fixing rust

2204 Views 36 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  James92Scort
As we all know, the trim came off my drivers door. I need to re-apply it, but there was rust behind it, and I want to get rid of the rust.

How do I get rid of the rust? In-depth explanations appreciated.

Is there an anti-rust spraypaint like rustoleum that will help stop the rust? Cause I grinded down to metal 2 days ago, and I haven´t painted it yet, and I looked at it today and it has ALREADY formed a thin layer of rust on the area I grinded. Outrageous.

That´s not rust, yer car is diseased. Leprusty! UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN!
To get rid of it you need help from above, simple as that.
And keep your car sanctioned away from other cars to keep it from spreading ;-)
I think I got it from james when he jumpstarted my car :)
wtf ever dude. lol I just went outside and started kicking my rust spot and shit started falling out...then i took my needle nose and started pulling out chunks.
I just painted my grille too...the red paint turned out to be almost an exact color, so I just started painting over the bondo i slabbed on my bumper...if you don´t stare at it, it looks good lol :-]
yeah but even if you bondo it... it still comes back, right?
if you don´t get rid of it, it never goes away, therefore "comes back" isn´t the right term...it just "starts to show again" I didn´t bondo over any rust, i bondo´d over my cracked bumper. hehe
well how long are we talking if I sand down to *mostly* bare, shiny metal, then put bondo, primer, and base coat on?
hey in my travels i came across this. It may/may not be helpful.

Anti-Rust
Sandblast or full chemical treatment.

So called "rust paints" don´t do anything. If anything they trap moisture under them and make it worse.
how about chemical rust "neutralizers"?
my rust adventure happened to me on sunday when i was doing some work on my car. i was sanding on the rear passenger side 1/4 panel and from where the metal was blistered at, sanding caused chunks (and i mean literally) to come OFF MY FUCKING CAR!!! this was on the body right where the fender well is. i tried bondoing over it, but after the bondo was cured, it would still crack apart because theres little for the bondo to hold onto because the rust was hella deep. im so pissed off right now at my car (this has been the icing on the cake...so to say) that i am seriously thinking about either selling it or parting it out. anyways, i will let you all know later this week as to what i decide to do...so if you got any ideas of stuff you may wanna buy (its a 93 Escort GT), start thinking about stuff you may wanna buy. ARRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG this damn car!!
I once had a Morris Mini Cooper (surely you must have heard of them!) It was very ancient and underneath my ´cosmetic surgery´ was more lace than metal. Each week when I cleaned it, I would use rust remover (a huge amount) then spray paint over the rusted areas. I even stuffed the holes around the headlight trims with household filler and I must say it looked amazing. Anyhow, I loaned the car to a friend while hers was in for a service and as she was parking it, her foot slipped on the accelerater and she crashed, hard-ish, into a low ornamental wall. She was horrified when one headlight fell out and huge lumps of bodywork landed on her garden path. So mortified was she to have caused so much damage, her old man (more money than sense) had the bodywork completely restored for me - it looked brand new and I kept it for another five years with no major rust problems. I never did own up about the ´Polyfiller.´ ;-)

You´re kidding, right?
Hey I think I saw that car on that Britian´s worst drivers show! ;-)
:-? Dunno - If you ever saw the film (or sequence from) The Italian Job starring Michael Caine, the mini chase (now famous) was done with three mini coopers driven by top class rally drivers. They were fabulous cars to drive (I had three) - very fast. Too light for fast work on any wet roads as they aquaplaned with inevitable consequences - they were followed by the Mini Cooper S which was also a terrific car. The only problem with minis was that young kids would buy the basic models (not Coopers) and drive them far too fast for their short and narrow wheelbase. One of my best friends was killed doing just that, he was found high up in a tree after he clipped the kerb on a bend and the car took off into the air. Sadly he was just one of many.

The mini was a 1950/60/70s cult car and although they still make a ´mini model´ today, I feel their time has past and most are now ladies´ shopping cars. No doubt there are many Brits who would give me an argument but I much prefer a good bit of metalwork around me these days. The ´old´ minis can still be seen around the car shows giving demonstrations of their manoeuvrability which is second to none - I last saw one of these demos at Santa Pod drag racing track, it went down a storm with the public. Sorry this reply has been a long time coming, I only just saw your last post:-?

i was at a 2-day autocross event last year and there were 3 mini´s participating! they were driven by some really old guys though, and i don´t know fer sure if they were coopers. i´m thinkin at least one of them was, it also had a mini bodykit too! :-D they weren´t altogether fast, i think my LX could easily beat them in a straight drag, but man they tore up the slalom courses, no loss of speed during any of the turns! they´re so cute :-]

(edit - i just remembered that you can see them in the background of my first showcase picture! there were a couple other brit cars too, an MG and a sunbeam tiger :-] )

:-o Cute? to look at I suppose. The cars you saw would almost certainly have been the Coopers - the ´old guys´ you saw could well have been the rally drivers I mentioned - one of whom was in the movie. I´d like to see you driving your LX through shopping malls, up and across wide steps and on to roofs!! Watch it, you´ll be an old guy one day - creeping around in a creaking old Escort, remembering the good old days!!! :-Y

Yes, they are minis but NOT the one´s I referred to. Coopers were not at all ´flashy´ usually solid colour bodywork with light coloured roof and, (sometimes) what I think you call, Viper stripes? They had wheel extensions, extra wide tyres and went like the bloody clappers!!
