Yes today I got so pissed of that I dumped $35,000 into my escort, especially because my sister was telling me how her friend was working at Harvey's through law school and has no debt; that I punched my windshield because of what an idiot I am that I have $140,000 debt after 6 years of medical school (I got sick in the middle of it); I'm still not even done med school yet.

I didn't even mean to damage it. But the whole thing cracked. Right from top to bottom. There's a star in the middle of it; especially where my middle knuckle hit.

So my question is this... Do I need to have it fixed. It doesn't obstruct my view; it doesn't obstruct the passenger's view. The windshild is still quite strong. I can still pound on it from the outside and it doesn't crack. Its smooth on the outside so the wiper blades should be alright. I didn't leak test it yet. I'll let the first rain test that.

My question then is... is it safe in the even of an accident; will glass shatter and fly at my face? Should I change it? What do you guys think?

As for me. I like it. Its like a bullet wound; a nice souvenier.

Ok, that will certainly not pass certification... :/

Anyway, as long as the crack is not growing you should be ok for a while, but if a large stone thrown up by a truck hits it, then you are in trouble. The glass is designed not to break in a way so that it enters the drivers compartment. It will shatter, but stay more or less intact as a thin film of plastic coats the inside and outside of the glass (that is why they call it safety glass...)

If you are along for the trip to London in the morning, you will be ok.... just take it in after and say that it was hit with a stome and let the Insurance take care of it.... :)

Thanks for your prompt reply mrvermin. I see that you are suggesting that I repair it. The problem with the insurance is that I only have liability. I don't have complete coverage. I'm a freak of nature who done some outrageous things and insurance is scared of me. They fear financial loss. I've totalled 4 cars doing stunts and dangerous manouvers.

So I guess I'll have to pay for this myself. I'll talk to you guys tomorrow but I don't even think I'm going to repair this; unless its a safety hazard of course. I'm sick of spending money on my car. I'm going to let it start to rot and decay. Let the rotting begin.

Good night.

Its okay man....Im well into 6 figures with my degree here at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Univ.

And After all the work I've put into the scort I have really bad luck so something (like the IC piping) seems to blow up and I'm lucky for it to run right. Anyhow I got pulled over last summer because, "I looked like a fast-mover" aka BS! He saw rims and heard an exhaust and pulled me over for the fun of it and gave me a warning.

I was so upset that a DPS officer 300 miles from my home pulled me over for nothing I put my fist through my windshield. I told the insurance co. that it was a really big rock during the x-country trip and they covered it.

I don't have full comprehensive coverage on my car. I just have liability coverge.

So will they still cover a rock cracking the windshild? Isn't it all my responsibility now. As I understand it, if I drive my car into a lamp-post, and total it, its totally my financial responsibility to repair my car. So why would they fix my windshield for me?

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. And even if I had comprehensive coverage, I wouldn't go to insurance to claim $200, I don't think.

The last time I claimed $900 from them for a small accident, my insurance rates tripled !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's some mother f**king serious shit. Big dough man. That's why my insurance sits at $6000 /a now. I can't even afford comprehensive anymore.

I'm not concerned about $200 to fix a windshield but if I don't have to, I'm not going to.

I'm frankly sick and tired of spending money on my shitbox or any other car for that matter, ferrari or otherwise, that when you subject them to the natural laws of entropy, are disseminated to pieces. I.e. things turn to shit. Another way of looking at it... if you plan to actually use and have fun with your car, expect it to go to the pits unless you spend a fortune maintining, repainting and reconditioning it. The other option, like a lot of ferrari owners do, is park your car. With a car like a ferrari, that is o.k.

All I'm saying is, I'm tired of spending money on the upkeep when the degradation is so fast and rapid (like a fist through the windsield in a split second). So let the rotting beging. I'm moving on to making money, not wasting it on a stupid car that only makes me poorer.

The general rule for certification is as follows:
As long as any windshield cracks or chips do not lie on the sweeping
surface of the wiper blades (ie. it's not in the drivers direct view) then the
car will pass a safety certification. So in other words, if you have a chip
or crack at the very top of the windshield or at the very outter edge, then
you'll have no problems. But generally, it's upto the mechanics discretion.

As for crash safety of the glass, you don't have to worry about the
windshield shattering in the event of a collision. It was designed to
protect the driver against getting glass in the face upon impact.

the windshield is a very vital part of your car's "skeleton". If you think about it this way, if you were to take out the windshield and take a frontal hit, all the stress would be placed on the A pillars. The windshield is very important when it comes to safety. If I were you I'd get it fixed asap.

Yeah...with our unibody cars, the windshield is a structural compnet.

sounds like you guys need to get girlfriends to help you releave your stress and stop punching glass. I learned that when I tried to punch someone through a window when I was young... only took 7 stiches though!

Way to go, Matt. Bring up the sore subject of girlfriends in front of an Embry Riddle student :x I've been away from an ERAU campus for 2 1/2 years now, and I'm still suffering from the after-effects of the no-girlfriend-blues. :(

I don't punch things anymore.. I put enough holes in walls when I was younger and bandaged enough bloody knuckles. I just throw things that aren't likely to break now. (and when I'm under the car I do a lot of screaming :D )

I hope your hand isn't hurt, Saj. If you're going to claim it was a rock on the highway, it's time to break the glass on the outside as well (unless you want to explain how the rock came from within).

Thanks for giving me the price skuce. Beaverboy, just my big knuckle (middle finger) hurt (still does if I press on it). And my skin got cut on my first (index) finger more distally. I don't understand how that happened; probably from friction.

Now I wish I didn't punch the f**king glass. Now I have to spend $220 for the glass, $50 for the banner installed, $30 for sticking all my gagets up, $60 for gas to get the f**king things. So over $350 to fix it right.

So what am I going to do. I'm not going to fix it. Infact. I'm not going to fix a f**king thing on my car. I'm sick of my car. The reason I put my fist through my windshield in the first place is that my car sucked so much of my money. Point proven.

My car can rot.

I was a fool to do it up. What was I thinking.

I should have taken all that money and bought a brand new mazda 6; nice car. No hassle. I could have bought a BMW 540i with the money I spent on my shitbox.

So let the rotting begin.

LOL I'm not serious. We'll see what I do. Only time will tell. Even I don't know right now.

First let me just say that i'm sorry you are having bad money luck. Bad luck sucks and bad money luck is among the worst kinds of bad luck to have.

It's too bad you don't live in FL. Windshields are free here. Companies actually pay people to let them replace broken ones.

I have to ask, though, am I the only one who was struck by irony here? Our friend was mad because of his financial situation, and reacted in a way that actually made it worse.
I'm sorry, i didn't laugh out loud, but i couldn't hold back a smile.

Sajeevan, i'm sure that once you are out of your financial hole, this little episode will be one that you can laugh about. Until then, though, try not to let your situation aggravate you to the point of smashing any more of your property. At least not, anything that you'll need to replace.
