Alright, I have a stock 1999 ford escort SE, and was wondering what the first non-aesthetic mod would be? I am a musician, and dont really know a heck of a lot about modding cars, but am gaining a growing interest in this field. ANy help greatly appreciated.

Peace :)

Well first off, do you live where you must pass emissions? If you want a cheap mod (free), remove the intake resenator box that's attached to the intake. There is a how-to around here I'm pretty sure. If not, PM Tracer-X he can tell you all sorts of good mods to do.

Yes I do live where I must pass emmisions. Drive-Clean Ontario. Which systems would be best to look at? Cooling, intake, what? Like I said earlier, I know my way around a car, but when it comes to modding, I am completely in the dark. My budget at this moment is around $300-$400 canadian. I will be getting paid for some studio work in the near future, and am just looking for some ideas. The plan is to make it retain the stock look as much as possible. Ie; no body kits, no fancy rims, nothing for looks. I want to get the mechanics beefed up before I even consider that. Hmmm. Where to start, where to start ...

Peace :)

If thats the case, do what I did, rework the suspension, cause stock 3rd Gen Escort Sedans (for the sake of saving time, I will call these "3GES") have one of the most pathetic suspension setups of all the Escorts, in my opinion. Go to a local junk yard and rip the 19mm rear sway bar off of a 2nd gen Escort wagon, it should botl right up, that'll probabley cost you around $20.00 American Dollars (don't really know the exchange rate so...), next if ya really in the mood and want to fabricate some stuff buy a 1988.5-1990 Escort GT header and throttle body... then mod the header for use with your stock EGR setup in order to remain "Clean".... a MSD ignition, and a low temp thermostat should also help, and strangely enough, go buy one of those tornado things for your intake, I at least have actually *GASP*, seen some improvement to the bottom end of my power band and a major improvement from 3000 RPMs to around 5000 RPMs.... has to be it's interaction with the SPI... but yeah try that and the rest use on little things like perhaps a underdrive pully from www.blackdiamondracing.com ....
