So, I have painfully been dealing with NON stop, unavoidable mechanical issues with my 96lx. for the past year it seems, I have spent so much money just keeping it running, that upgrades of any sort have been out of order.

I would like to extend my thanks to those on here who have helped me decipher some of the problems I have been having. This board has saved me somewhere in the realm of $1000 in the past year alone. If I could send a box of chocolates or something I would :)

Unfortunately, most of my breakdowns have been beyond my mechanically expertise, I. E. dropping my ENTIRE exhaust from the manifold back, clutch, timing belt, and a few more things I forget.

I want to start making minor cheap upgrades and adjustments to gain power. I do not want to cut corners, so when I say I am looking for cheap methods, I just mean the little things I person can do to gain some horsepower/torque.

I am doing a bunch of bodywork on my own, as this is something I have a little bit of experience in. I explored the idea of getting a paint job, but realized I only need certain panels done, and feel comfortable doing this.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again!

The only easy thing you can do, that will add enough power to make a difference you can actully feel, would be N20.

Most people will say "air filter, header, exshaust, UDP, tune, 14mm plug wires and JDM super maga spark plugs." But that stuff does'nt really do much.

What kind of problem were you having with your Escort? My 96lx is the most reliable car I've ever owned. 200k and going strong.

Alot. the above mentioned issues, plus water pump, alternator, many many electrical problems, cv joints, control arm, rear brakes, a fuel intake issue that I cannot even remember how it was fixed, two cooling fan failures, A/C problems. And a few more smaller things I cannt recall.

I know most of this is routine maintenance type stuff, and would be expected to be done. The problem is how quickly everything happened. It was all within a year and a half. I dealt with a few things on my own, but I consider myself only mildly mechanically inclined. The thing was being worked on every 3rd week it seems, sometimes by me, sometimes my mechanic.

I still love my baby, do not get my wrong. I almost wish I would have kept my old 93 though, I had way better luck with her. I blew the engine right out of that car, and pretty much junked it. I probably would have been better off doing an engine swap instead of buying a new one.

I had a good feeling about the 96 when I bought it, and so did my dad. He knows a whack load about cars, restored them for years. For some reason though, everything went to pots shortly after I got it.

As far as the power gain, I am only looking for a little. I guess, I could rephrase what I said as well. Maybe it is not so much that I wish to bump up my existing horsepower, as I am trying to regain what was already there, and lost. So, I am looking for a tune up PLUS, so to speak. The basics are good, plugs, wires, air filter, oil changes, etc.

Is there any other important, yet fairly in expensive components I could consider to regain (maybe possibly slightly boost) my hp and/or torque?

Thanks again!

Plug's & wires & air filter. Maybe clean the MAF sensor also. That's about it as far as regaining any lost power.

I'm guessing the 96 had a little over 100,000 miles when you got it? The normal wear and tear parts show up around 140k or so. But one you make a good round of repairs, you should be good for abnother 100k.

Hey That is a good point. I cannot see much else going wrong at this point, short of my car completely imploding or exploding :)

Do you have much of an opinion on air intakes? Effectiveness? Brands to choose?

Thanks again!
