ive got a 2nd gen 1.9/5 speed. the engine/tranny are stock other than cold air intake and exhaust. a friend told me i could get more power by putting a final drive gear in my transmission. what is everyones opinion on this. should i do this to a stock trans?

I don't think you can get a lower final drive for your trans, not from an Escort anyway. They aren't the easiest thing to replace anyway, you basically have to take the trans apart to change it. You could swap in the trans from a 97+ Escort or ZX2. Both have a lower final drive.

Juggalo, didn't you read my gear ratios thread? Some of the auto trannys had lower final drive gears so it is quite possible on your trans.

And besides the chore of getting at the differential in a trans, is the matter that anytime you change the carrier or the bearings in a diff, you should ensure the preloading for the bearings is what it should be.
