After being under the car many times, I was wondering why the exhaust system looked so restricted. Well, I'm looking at a solution, and the only solution I can think of is replacing the entire exhaust system, from the exhaust mani to the tip. What size is the outlet right now, and what size should I get, what parts do I need? Thanks in advance for all the great replies.

Also, Do I need to have the catalytic converter? I don't think SC does emissions testing.

Technically, federal law requires that you have a cat and that it be in the stock location but some states don't check for them. If having a cat is a requirement of your state inspection then you will fail without one.

The outlet on the cat is 2" and the rest of the system may go as small as 1 3/4 in some places but by the time it enters the muffler it's 1 7/8". If you replace from the cat back with 2" you should be good. Don't go bigger than 2 1/4" though.

I just did a little bit of research, Sc does not require emissions testing, which I would assume include the cat converter?

If SC does not do emissions standards you dont need a cat. But a cat may rob you of 1 HP, nothing more. If a cat cleans up the environment it's worth 1 hp to me cause I'm gonna offset that with a V8 stang.

I don't mind the horsepower so much, but it's just my budget right now. But I will check into all of that, thanks!

i would use a modified 1.9HP header and run 2 or 2.25" smooth bent pipe with an underbody universal cat (can be had for like $60 bucks) back to a nice stock style muffler (no cannons, or huge v8 mufflers or stupid stuff).

the muffler is where i would spend the most of my money on the exhaust. it defines what you hear, how you enjoy the exhaust...

...and if your piping and cat were 100% non-restrictive (which is impossible but go with me here) the muffler is the last thing your exhaust gases passes through and if it is restrictive or crappy, the rest of the piping doesnt matter.

I remember replacing my stock exhaust with a Dynomax Super Turbo, I dont know why but it sounds as quiet as stock. I was hoping for something with a nice little roar.

GRR People.. just because there is no emissions testing in your area, does not mean it is legal to remove your cat!

Tampering with emissions systems on a vehicle (including the cat) REGARDLESS of whether there is emissions testing in your area or not... is a FEDERAL OFFENSE.

If caught, you can be fined thousands and thousands of dollars, and your car will be confiscated. Not worth the risk IMHO.

As the 'fart cans' get more popular on these small cars, cops are getting smarter and checking for this more often. I seriously don't recommend it.

If you're going to do anything, replace your cat with a performance cat.. but removing it helps very little and can sometimes make your car run worse!

This is very true. I hollowed mine but for a temp deal. I am going to replace it very soon with a new high flow one. My old one was getting plugged and had no cash for one at the time being. But I will still pass a visual inspection by a cop. And most people nowadays have not been around a carburetor enough to smell the difference. I can tune a car off the exhaust smell But I have a wb and guage for the part when the car is moving. Kinda hard to drive it and smell the exhaust.

I don't hate the environment or anything, and I'm not ever going to put one of those stupid fart cans on this car, I just really don't have the money for a stock cat, let alone a performance.

here if you get the money consider getting this exhaust system. its a monza catback system. its not too spendy, bolts up to your current catalytic converter and it will give you more and/or the same type of power as those stupid fart cans do except keeps things a lil quieter ;)

once I get tha cash this is what I am going to get.

You have a 94 so the O2 sensor won't notice that you don't have a cat. Its still good to have one though, just to keep it legal.

I've seen people cut the ends off of the cat... chip away at the internals and cut it out... hammer in an exhaust pipe inside then weld it back up.

This way it appears legal and you don't get that 'tingy' sound you would by having the exhaust just bounce around inside that empty chamber.

But it is a lot of work and technically 'illegal' so if you can't weld it yourself, you'll have a hard time finding someone to do it for you...

What he said.
Your 94 does not have a downstream o2 sensor. Only 1 BEFORE the cat.

You don't need one, but it WILL keep the car from sounding raspy due to the 4 banger.

My Stang utilizes 4 cats, and they're all gone due to install of an Offroad H pipe.
