I have a 95 Escort Wagon. I was disassembling my rear struts and found that both springs had broken. From reading other posts, this seems to be a common problem caused by moisture collecting inside the sleaves. Ordinarily, I'd just want to pick up a pair of used springs (I'm looking for a cheap fix) since springs don't normally go bad. But since this problem is probably endemic to any of the older springs which feature the sleave, I'm worried. So I'm wondering what cars have compatible (the same, or perhaps a bit stiffer) springs. How about the Protege? Any of them not have the sleave?

While we are at it, if there is a sleave, is there any harm to getting rid of it to try to prevent this problem in the future?

if you are going cheap...go for monroe or the ones you can buy from autozone/pepboys/advance auto stores and remove the rubber sleeve on the spring itself....
