It's with mixed feelings that I announce that I no longer own the Escort. This afternoon I traded it for a 2001 Dodge Caravan. Ongoing handling/steering issues with the Escort, as well as considerable upcoming maintenance (steering rack replacement, timing belt/water pump) convinced me to cut my losses and be done with it. Having already sunk $1400 into it in the past 3 months, I chose to walk away from any further repairs.

All is not lost however! My wife will now be driving the van, and I will assume "her" car (both vehicles are in my name), the 98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Now I can finally devote some attention to fixing up the former family car the way I've always wanted to. My first plan is to up the boost with a supecharger underdrive pulley. That will increase base horsepower from 240 to 280. Not bad eh? Boost is a wonderful thing.

My note today is to say goodbye and thanks to all those whose advice has been so immensely helpful in diagnosing my car's problems. Your insight and experience has made my payment to FEOA easily the best $10 I've ever spent.

I'd like to draw special attention in particular to:

Siragan
TitoElSpicco
James92Scort

These people have knowingly or unknowingly contributed the most to helping me learn about my car and diagnose it's handling ills. Their posts, while sometimes controversial in nature and resulting in many flame wars, have played an important role in getting me through the past 2 years with my Escort.

So, good luck and goodbye to all!

Man, they're dropping like flies.

Crap, I would have done the timing belt/water pump job for you if you'd bought the parts. And I'm sure we could have found a good, used steering rack for $100 at the boneyard. But you would have had to drive to my place, which is on no map.

Good luck with the Dodge. You're gonna need it.

Damn.. that's sad. Out of the three people who helped you (me first, of course :p) 2 of them are already gone from the escort realm. *sniff* And now we're losing another one.

It sucks how you had to trade it in. Your GT was probably my favorite escort on the boards. It was tasteful and clean all around. I just hope it goes to a good owner and not some teenage punk who beats the hell out of it and can't afford to keep it maintained. Although, sadly, most EGTs die that death. I would have gotten all the issues you had fixed in a couple days of work. It would have made the perfect project GT that I've been looking for for the past 5 months. Where do you live anyways?

Well either way, I hope you have fun soccer-moming your childers around (lol j/k). Those minivans- I'm tellin ya, it's the quiet ones you gotta watch out for... :)

I think that we're gonna be seeing more and more people leave tho, I know a lot of us are familiar with their cars and repairing them (myself not being one of these people though) but most of us are driving older economy cars and don't really want to put much money into them. I know that I've been looking around and I can get a brand new economy car for only $16,500 Canadian, and it's already more powerful. I will have to admit, I'm also going to check out a really nice Integra GS-R on Monday, it has more km (140,000), but the things immaculate, never seen a winter, 5 speed with a V-tech, power sunroof, body kit, sweet rims, etc.... for only $7000 (canadian) and probably negotiable.

Let me be the first to say:

HA-HA!

It would be one thing if you got a newer, better sleek 2DR Hatchback, like the Mercury Cougar or one of those Scions (sp?), but dude, you getting a minivan.

Sorry to see you go Zeemax. At one time I considered getting rid of my EGT. Then I went and got a new Explorer Sport Trac. All of a sudden, I realized that I could have my cake and eat it to. Needless to say, I now own a 1996 EGT and a 2002 Explorer Sport Trac.

My 2002 Explorer

My 1996 Escort GT

I can now work on the Escort as needed, and still have a vehicle to drive whenever I need one.

GTR Engine, It is coming...

Haha. Quiet correct.... I've found it difficult of late to drive the Escort as my daily commute. Sure it's fun and will surprise the unsuspecting, but it's just had too many oddball issues. The roads going into Richmond just aren't kept up well at all, and the Escort rattles like a baby toy going over all the bumps and pavement ridges. The GTP, while it's got a sport suspension, soaks up bumps without protest. Plus, I can now comfortably carry 5 people without having to apologize for all the rattles and the overly stiff ride.

I wasn't going to do anymore posting on this site, but after cleaning up the garage, I found that I had a set of Escort headlamps, corner lights, and green front grill (LX/Pony). I also took off the front strut brace from my GT. All of these items are available if anybody wants them. I'm not selling to make a profit - if you need any of these items, just send me an email to [email protected] and I'll ship it to you. I'll also include how much shipping cost me so you can in return send me the shipping costs. Just don't stiff me though, your Karma will suffer...

That said, if you want anything, make sure you email me as I may not be checking this board much anymore.

Zeemaqx,

When you are ready to buy a new Ford minivan, let me know. I am more then willing to send an X-Plan PIN your way.

We had three Caravans at work. Every 60,000 mile, each one got a Tranny rebuild like clockwork. I hope you have better luck then we did.
