I got a 91 exploder, let me give you some advice about them. When mine got around 125000 the rods tooka crap and you can hear the valves a block away. Sound like I got a diesel in it, now you may think well replace the rods but the problem being that the rods themselves didn´t wear down. So now it is a game of figurning out which size rods fit now. And I have had no luck with the 4 wheel drive on mine. First the hub went bad, and they ain´t cheap to come by and now it won´t look in at all, i was told it might be the vacume system or a hose somewhere but i can´t find it. So I am not trying to stear you away from it cause I do love my exploder but I wanted to give you some warnigns to consider. I would buy another exploder if one came along i liked. As far as swapping the 1.9 to the 1.8 I have herd people on here say it ain´t as easy as it sounds. The mounts are differnt i think and the tranny itself is too. But i would ask someone esle I am sure thats what i herd about it.

1.9 to a 1.8 requires: motor, tranny, transaxles, cv´s, engine mounts, wiring harness, ecu, tons of extra random junk like check valves and stuff, and then you´ll have to figure out the plumbing for the cooling system (shouldnt be too hard).

wouldn´t be easy. Talk to Chad, he went Zetec. At least the 2.0 SOHC uses the same tranny and drivetrain and stuff. Heck go DOHC 2.0....it would still be easier then 1.8L.

For the most part the 4.0l in the exploder and in the ranger for that matter is a great engine, not quite as bullet proof as the 3.0l but nothing to worry about. as far as the hubs go, yes they suck. all of the auto lock in hubs were junk. go spend 200 bucks on the conversion kit and a new set of warn lock in lock out hubs. best money you will spend. and if you are having problems getting the 4 wheel to work, check the switch in the dash the push button 4 wheel drive was the worst idea i ever saw. the old fashion shifter that actually goes to the transfer case was the best ever. I would go with a zetec swap, more parts available.
