I'm all ready to pull my engine/transmission out in one piece, and I was going to just yank it out from above with a hoist, but there's really quite a bit of stuff in the way. I'm wondering, were these engines originally installed from underneath, or lowered in? It seems like it might be smoother to drop it out the bottom. It's on a lift right now, so it's no problem raising the car high enough.

Service manual says drop it. I lifted mine without much issue, but I did have to kind of massage the engine coming out. If you have a trans jack availible, I would drop it. If not, I would lift it.

Great, I'll definitely go out the bottom then.

Definitely drop if you removing the tranny too. Best bet would to remove the sway bar brackets first. If you're just removing the engine, out thru the top.

I actually ended up pulling it out top today, transmission and all. Didn't even have to remove the hood, thank God. I was going to drop it through the bottom, but when all the mounts were removed and it was swinging freely, it just looked a lot more straightforward to come through the top.

Mine went out and in the bottom, It seemed easier as I'd tried to take it out the top, and that was a no go. But I took the whole tranny out, too.

take it out through the bottom. Easiest thing in the world, so much more space, and the car doesnt weigh that much to lift over it.

The engine doesn't weigh much to carry, either.

Well, I also had two other guys helping me, pulling it and prodding it to get it clear of everything. If I was alone, I'd probably do it through the bottom.

Oh, I know the cars are light. I did actually carry my assembled engine years ago when I first put my car together, so they're not much over 250 pounds. Not exactly light for the displacement, but they are a strong block.
