Whats going on fella´s New guy here and need your help.Had my Heater Core leak on my ecu, i think Blade mentioned that happened to him. I got a used ecu BP08 from a running 91. I ran very rich, white smoke coming from the exhaust and strong gas smell from the engine, idle bouncing up from 900 to 1500+ constantly, engine temp wayyyyyyyyyyyyy up and thats after 2 mins running. Found a rip in the rubber intake hose which I since replaced. Would that cause those probs or contribute to some of them and what else could be going on. Didn´t change anything to the engine after the heater core/ecu fiasco except for plugs wires and cap since they were due. Don´t want to start it up again until I hear what you guys have to say.

Yes that did happen to him.

If you´re running rich then there will be a very strong gas smell because you´re not burning it all. Also, if you´re seeing white smoke out the tailpipes and the temp gauge is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy up then, obviously, you´re burning coolant.Could have a crack in the block somewhere. :-o :-Y
A rip in the intake hose would cause the revs to jump up and down. it´s upstream of the MAF (mass airflow sensor), so unfiltered and unmetered air is getting into the engine. (technically that could partially fix your running rich...if you think about it. hehe) :)

get the block tested. I would think it´s on it´s last leg. :-[

Yeah, that´s the EXACT way it happened to me. Let me explain why:

When the ECU filled with coolant, it shorted the two banks of fuel injectors (you can see their chips side by side). Everything happened to me the same EXACT way on my way to the track on Dec 7th 120miles away from home.

Put the ECU in, and replace the heater core...and start it up. Should fix all your problems.

I have pics of the heatercore replacement:

have fun, too me a week to replace the heatercore. (well with available free time)

I plan on doing the same thing to tear out my vents, replace my gauges with something more unique, and then I´m going to wash and paint my dash. :-]

Well Pimp if the fool on the assembly line decided to put the little rubber and fabric piece on top of the ECU in stead of cramming it between the ECU and the plastic bottom trim I wouldn´t have had a complete meltdown. Blade how much coolant was still in your ECU> :-| . Well it runs but since I let it sit awhile (6 months) hunting down another ECU and replacing the dash I think my gas is causing the rough idle. What you guys think?? And James, if you saw Blades pics on the dash removal it make you rethink you plans abit, hehehe. It´s Fucked :-Y . Take care everyone and thanks for the help.

Nah I saw all the pics and I got a 40 hr vacation time coming up (which doesn´t include the full two saturday and sundays of those weeks too) and I´m going to rip the hell out of my dash and do everything I´ve planned on doing to it.

Now that I think about it, is there a way I can guard my ECU from being spilled upon if the coolant line decides to break down the line? that´d be awesome.
